Time to start exploring fusion reactors instead. Will require more fortifications to keep the pressures in line, and may possibly create a huge black hole in the middle of our ocean that could destroy our planet if it explodes, but way less maintenance and handling of spent fuel.

Submarine and aircraft carrier reactors don’t get “refueled”. They get a whole new reactor every 30 years. Why? Because they use highly enriched uranium—like 95%+ U235. It allows the reactor to be small and remain self contained for a lifetime. Land based commercial reactors use low enriched uranium (<20% or 5%) so they need real refueling every 18-48 months. It’s a much simpler and easier job however because the reactors are much bigger and accessible.

That's why the new subs have life of the submarine nuclear reactors designed to last forty five years

poor design, needs to have a modular reactor than can be swapped in a few hours

I've participated in a couple of sub refuelings and this isn't all that accurate. For one thing, a sub's pressure hull is not several feet thick, lol. It's barely several inches thick.
