AI + automation for science? Start small—runaway AI labs sound great, but legacy spaghetti code + rushed integration = chaos. Layer AI incrementally. Pilot, track real throughput (not just lab benchmarks), then scale. 18 yrs in: small steps > big promises. Measure what sticks.
