The most interesting Scottish election commentary yesterday from Ailsa Henderson. Some good pointers for what the “independence majority” should do, at least in terms of tone, next: “I’m not talking about the rights and wrongs of holding a referendum or of independence, but just how people react to the...

"Today, we can see the futility of the political route and the bankruptcy of the political system writ large." "Scotland is annexed, a dominion under the English crown. And it is the English crown, not the fictional UK crown, that we're all told about. "Not a partner, not of any kind. In fact, the whole partnership story is a concoction fashioned to convince the world that Scots are part of a joint state and to disguise the fact that Scotland is, in reality, nothing other than a colony. "It's not a partner in a marriage, but a kidnap victim. And you do not escape from a kidnapper by filing for divorce from a fictional marriage. "Second, even if it were possible to break free through a referendum or an election, or to propose any other route that would be approved as lawful by the kidnapping state, the political system in Scotland would not guarantee any of the things that sing in our bones as Scots. We dream of justice, compassion, equality, prosperity and care for all without preference or privilege. "But what we have is an english system of concentrated power and privilege, which those Scots who enjoy it will not give up easily. Where the government sits in authority over the people, and the people surrender their hopes, their ambitions and their human and civil rights to the whims of their elected representatives. Where all that we hold dear, all that we depend on for decency, fairness and security, depends on the honor, honesty and good faith of those elected. "Because once it is elected, we have no means of curbing, challenging or preventing anything a government may choose to do, whether or not that's lawful, just, rational or humane. "Today, we can see the futility of the political route and the bankruptcy of the political system writ large. Our helplessness in the face of the state marching side by side with destitution and despair. "This is why liberation was born. Because the route to the Scotland we dream of neither can nor will come through the present political system, but through the restoration of the political, territorial and judicial rights, the constitutional provisions that belong to the people of this nation, in law and in justice, even under the terms of this fraudulent union, and certainly under international law. "They mean that we, the people, are sovereign, in fact, not in sound bite, the ultimate authority of this nation of Scotland. "They mean that the interests of the people, collectively known as the common good, are not only the primary purpose of government, but the only condition on which it's permitted to exist. "They mean that we are entitled to overrule, remove or replace a government that violates that condition of its existence, that fails to honour its promises, to consult the people or to act according to their wishes and welfare. "And in the modern world, that means the right to all the mechanisms that we see in a nation like Switzerland, which will make that sovereign power a reality. "All this is part of what we call decolonization, true Scottish self determination. And it is the soul and purpose of liberation Scotland. "Impossible? Other nations have trodden the path to decolonisation. Not one has bowed to the kidnapper and asked for permission. "We know now that we can gain our independence as a state by first gaining independence from a colonizing power. So that instead of waiting to reclaim real sovereignty of the people after independence, we gain our independence by first reclaiming our sovereign Scottish rights. "The next step on this road is establishing the committee of the Scottish Liberation Movement. This committee will be elected from the membership of Liberation and will operate under a ratified constitution. "And it will register Scotland's Liberation Movement with the United Nations." INVESTING IN OUR CHILDREN IS PRIORITY: Usha Vance was asked about her efforts to help the literacy rate of children increase, and it's something she's PASSIONATE about: "I think one way we can kind of counteract that is giving them the tools they need to be able to think critically and pursue whatever it is that they care about, but also the gift of concentration and focus in a really challenging world and I see childhood literacy is the start of all that." Our children are the FUTURE of the country, and we should be doing EVERYTHING we can to ensure that they have a foundational education that sets them up for SUCCESS!

Something worth thinking about: how did America get so extreme and so divided over the Middle East...and along what lines? There is a big part of our society that is taking a complex situation that is new to so many and making it a competition of which side is worse. I'm not asking you to draw any specific conclusions, but there is something to the nature of selective outrage...so many being so angry about things that they only see happening in what, in whom they oppose....despite how clear the situation may be. We have to focus on what matters - you have to be caring about the hostages and the situation on the ground.

On his return flight from France, Pope Leo XIV is asked about the steady decline of Catholic Church in Germany and the astonishing rise of both the extremist Left and Far Right in Germany. On the former the Pope says: "The phrase you said the Church is dying in Germany, or the diminishing numbers. People have said that about France in the past and yet we saw what happened over the past four days. I believe that if we find the true missionary spirit and the right way to go about it, there are still many, many people in Germany who want to live and celebrate their Christian and Catholic faith." On the latter: "we go back to the values of the Gospel, which are not about hatred and division, but they're about understanding and compassion and accompanying. I hope deeply, and hopefully the Church can also be a part of this—that we can find ways of reaching out to a majority of people of goodwill who will understand how important that their commitment, even in terms of participating in political processes, will enable them to make clear choices for the common good and not for extremist ideas that perhaps will do much more damage than we are even aware of right now."

At the Forever Canada rally in Red Deer, one of Thomas Lukaszuk’s people followed me through the crowd and said he was there to “protect” me. I wasn’t sure how to take that, so we joked about it a little. But then we talked about something serious. A few days earlier in Edmonton, a Forever Canada supporter attacked an Alberta independence supporter who was peacefully waving his flag on the side of the road. The man tried to rip the flag away and pushed him toward traffic. That could have ended very badly. We both agree that that kind of behavior is wrong, and the person responsible should be in jail. That matters. We can disagree about Alberta independence. We can debate equalization, immigration, pipelines, federal control, Ottawa, the constitution, and the future of this province. But political violence has no place in this debate. Peaceful Albertans have every right to wave a flag, support a referendum, ask questions, and advocate for Alberta independence without being assaulted or threatened. But that is where we are at right now in Alberta. Full video:

Gov. Spanberger: "In his farewell address, George Washington warned us about the possibility of 'cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men' rising to power. But he also encouraged us, all Americans, to unite in a common cause to move this nation forward. That is our charge once more, and that is what we are seeing across the country. It is deeply American and patriotic to do so, and it is how we ensure that the state of our union remains strong, not just this year, but for the next 250 years as well. Because we, the people, have the power to make change, the power to stand up for what is right, the power to demand more of our nation."

I’ve made a short film. Look at the things around you: doors, bins, staircases, furniture, railings, doorhandles, windows. Do you like how they look, or not? Modern design has become boring, but it doesn’t have to be this way. The word “beautiful” is overused. We don’t need “beautiful” lamps, bus stops, and water fountains – we just need lamps, bus stops, and water fountains that are interesting, that actually mean something. Or, at the very least, not boring. Because the aesthetics of architecture and urban design aren’t just a bonus; they totally change how we think, feel, and behave. Boring environments make us more stressed and less productive; they erode our sense of community; they make us sadder, less trusting, and lonelier. A boring world is one where we spend even more time online and where our addictions are even harder to battle. The Problem There is global, widespread dissatisfaction with how the world looks. In this film, and the series it will lead to, we want to investigate that feeling and give it a voice. The point isn’t that we should return to the past or get rid of modernism. It’s about learning from the past in order to improve the present, and about giving the public what they very clearly want, which isn’t the eradication of modernism but the co-existence of modernism AND traditionalism. Just look where tourists go, where they take their photos, and that tells you everything you need to know about what most people find interesting or beautiful. And look at where people go on holiday. It’s always to cities filled with old architecture and design, with churches and mosques and palaces, with charming little alleyways and stone staircases and wrought-iron railings. Of the world’s fifty most visited buildings, only four were made in the 20th century, and they’re all museums or memorials. There’s a reason why posts about this go viral online all the time. Regardless of why the change happened, it is clearly the case that we no longer make things how we used to. People are rightly confused by the fact that old lamp posts (to take the example we focus on in the film) are usually so pretty, while modern ones are usually so boring. Some people say this is just an example of survivorship bias… and they’re mostly correct. But that’s the whole point! Saying old buildings are usually prettier than modern buildings is not to say that architecture used to be better, or that the past was better. It is simply to say that certain kinds of buildings, because they have been preserved, are good examples of what people like most. In which case... shouldn't we try to design at least some buildings in a way that we know people like? A Unifying Cause Everybody, from all sides of the political spectrum and all backgrounds, stands to benefit from a world that is designed more thoughtfully and imaginatively. The world could be such a colourful, meaningful, and thrilling place! So this isn’t about left versus right or conservatism versus progressivism; it’s about making our world a more interesting and meaningful place to live in. This should be a unifying cause, because everybody loses out when our homes and cities are badly designed. I want this film to unite people who think they’re on opposite sides, and to create a consensus that we need to change our approach to how we design our buildings and the objects – benches, bus stops, bins, lamp posts, aircon units – that fill our cities. The Importance of Details We are incredibly rich and have a sprawling choice of shows to stream, phones to buy, or shoes to wear… but everything feels more and more generic all the time. If you want to understand a society, don’t listen to what it says about itself – look at what it creates. You can learn everything about the Victorians – the good and the bad – just by looking at their lamp posts. And what do the ordinary details of the modern world say about us? That we are technologically advanced, very efficient… and care more about making money, about making things as quickly and cheaply as possible, than making our world an enjoyable place to actually live in. It’s important to learn about why and how things have changed, but that’s for another time. The first step is establishing that the public aren’t happy with modern architecture and design, and that something needs to be done. But what we need isn’t a total revival of so-called ‘traditionalism’; the truth is that traditionalism and modernism can (and should) co-exist. The trouble right now is that we only have one, and that people are tired of it. The Power of Noticing But this film (and the series it will, all being well, lead to) is about more than the specific argument it presents. Above all it’s about a way of seeing the world around us, a way of noticing and thinking. “How you do anything is how you do everything.” That is probably true, and it also applies to whole societies, not just individuals; a single doorbell implies everything else about the whole socio-economic and political system that gave rise to its creation. And, beyond being merely “useful”, the ability to notice details makes the world a richer place to live in, and life a richer thing to lead. This is what the film is about, more than anything: the power and joy of noticing. A Bigger Project This short film is just the beginning. We want to make a full series about the history of art and architecture, both for their own sake and also to see what we can learn about life in the twenty-first century and how to improve it. To keep updated you can join our email list over at our website, linked in the reply below. Final Words You can watch the film here on X, or over on YouTube, also linked in the reply below. So… this is where the dream begins, the dream of a new series and the dream of a more charming, more interesting, more meaningful modern world. Spread the word.

WATCH: Kristin Davison calls out CNN journalists to their faces, saying they’ve shown they don’t care about the American people because they’ve spent an hour talking about themselves and nothing else.... “Well, you know, I think that this President has probably been one of the most effective in terms of working the press and using it to his advantage. So, we’re 36 minutes into this program, and we haven’t mentioned the American people once. What does this do to them? We are sitting here in a D.C. bubble saying the poor press, we can’t go in, and that is why we talk about trust and how White Houses trust press corps is. The American people don’t trust the press. And why is that? Because we’ve just spent 40 minutes talking about how bad the President is and how, you know, this is a — we are the victims, and that can’t be the case. We have to go broaden that, and I think, to your point, we’re talking about how this could be a negative, that we’re not capturing the arrival of the Chinese president today. That might be a benefit in some of these places, right? If you’re running for office in the Midwest or in some of these places, you might be okay. That there’s not a glowing image of President Trump and President Xi today. So, there is — I do believe that we have to look a step beyond now. I don’t know the legal part of it. Fortunately, I didn’t go to law school, but thinking through — that will all work itself out. To your — to your point, your arguments, I’m talking about the political part of it and the fact that right now, yes, the approval rating is down. The press approval rating and trust is even worse. And why is that? Because sometimes we forget the connectivity there, and that is what Trump has been so effective at doing. We’ve now spent the entire time talking about this and not about his approval rating, not about gas prices, not about diesel, not about the election.”

Warnock: We can’t allow people to distract us, even with the ideological differences we have in our party. If you think about some of the most spirited debates we’re having in our party right now—and they are important, and I don’t mean to smooth over those debates—we’re arguing about how to help ordinary folks. I’d rather be having that argument and be in this party than the party that is focused on giving billionaires tax cuts. What I want to see billionaires do is spend a whole lot less on elections and a whole lot more in taxes.

"So many of our middle class will not accept the concept of colonisation, or that we are a colony because it might mean that other people won't like them. "The central problem of the Scottish bourgeoisie is, they want the establishment, and particularly the English establishment, to admire and like them. Give them a pat on the head, you're one of us. And that's been the story for 300 years. "And in some ways those are the people that need to waken up, because there's even people in the Yes Movement who think in those terms, who think in British political terms, and think in the British political structures. "I have never come across anybody in a pro-independence movement anywhere in Europe, or in the ones from the French colonies in the Pacific and in the Caribbean, who sees France, for instance, in the same way as we see Britain. "They recognise what France is doing to them, and has been doing to them since their ships arrived in their harbours. The fact of the matter is, they know they're exploited. "One of the great con-tricks on us, as a people, is the fact that it has been kept from us, even by our own middle class, and our own establishment, the simple fact that we are the cash cow for England. And now our language needs to change, and Alf's [Baird] changing the language and that is a good thing. For anybody who was watching any of the coverage of the Irish election last week, when they spoke to people in Belfast, did they talk about Britain? "No, they don't talk about Britain, they talk about England. England wants this, England wants that. We need to get on that bus because that's the reality. "And it's a reality, the movement historically, for 300 years has known, but our middle class have always buried that, because they don't want to be embarrassed. In the same way as they change their... they change their accents because they don't want to be embarrassed. "That cringe factor does not exist in our working class. The people know that Scotland is exploited by its relationship with England through the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. "And what Alf is saying, and what we all need to start saying is, stop being embarrassed about telling the truth! England exploits Scotland, end of." "So many of our middle class will not accept the concept of colonisation, or that we are a colony because it might mean that other people won't like them. Chris Christie made a joke of UAPs during the debate. Reality: this issue has been raised by credible and decorated members of our military & is currently being investigated by Congress. We deserve a government that stops lying to its people and just comes clean about what we know & what we don’t - about WMDs in Iraq, about the ‘08 bailouts, about the Trump-Russia collusion hoax, about the origin of Covid-19, about Hunter Biden’s bribes, about how our $$ is being blown in Ukraine. We CAN handle the TRUTH. And we deserve a government that gives it to us.

Throughout American history, we have faced mortal crises of our democracy. From the 1770s when we broke from Great Britain, the 1860s in the battle to end slavery, the 1930s and 40s with the collapse of our economic system and the war against fascism. At every one of these moments, the Americans that stepped up fundamentally understood that the world they needed to build could not be the world they had come from. That to protect the rights of their children, they needed to give them new rights, new freedoms. We are in one of those moments of crisis. Nobody wants to live in interesting times, but we do. Nobody wants to be asked to do the hard work, but we will be asked. And we must rise to the occasion. But as we do, we must understand this is not just about going back to what we had. This is about building something new.

Robert F Kennedy Jr - "We shouldn't be talking about Glyphosate, we should be talking about Roundup" "If you read all of these documents that we've gotten [and] see all the sneaky stuff they do.... " KENNEDY - "Even in their most private emails to each other.. they're talking about how nobodies ever tested this and we know that the formulation is much, much more toxic than Glyphosate ... [it's made to] slip through the bark of the plant [and] those same chemicals also enable that molecule to penetrate the blood brain barrier".

The culture today is toxic. Media reflects it and amplifies it. As a society, we’ve become… Cynical about the motivations of others Simplistic in our thinking about complex issues Certain that we have all the answers Scared of the challenges we face It’s understandable, but unsustainable. And it doesn’t have to be like this. Progress happens when we’re… Curious about new ideas Thoughtful about hard questions Open to considering other perspectives Constructive about the challenges we face In everything we do at Freethink Media, it’s our ethos that makes us different. And it’s our ethos that makes what we do matter. Freethink: A platform for the people and the ideas that are changing the world
