What can a space rock tell us about life on Earth? NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft made a careful approach to the near-Earth asteroid 101955 Bennu in October of 2020 to collect surface samples. In September 2023, the robotic spaceship returned these samples to Earth. A recent analysis has shown, surprisingly, that the samples contained 14 out of the 20 known amino acids that are the essential building blocks of life. The presence of the amino acids re-introduces a big question: Could life have originated in space? However, the protein building blocks themselves held another surprise -- they contained an even mixture of left-handed and right-handed amino acids -- in contrast to our Earth which only has left-handed ones. ‼️ 323 vials containing deadly viruses go missing from a lab in Australia — ABC News Among them, nearly 100 vials contained the Hendra virus (transmitted from horses to humans, with a 57% fatality rate). Two vials contained the hantavirus (spread by rodents, with a 38% fatality rate), and 223 vials contained the lyssavirus (rabies virus, with an almost 100% fatality rate). The most likely cause of the "disappearance" is thought to be the loss of containers during transfer to a new freezer. The Ministry of Health is conducting an investigation.

Muscle loss with age is common, but much of that decline is driven by inactivity, not aging alone. On average, we reach peak muscle mass somewhere between 20 and 30, then lose about 8% per decade after that. By the time many adults reach their 70s and 80s, they may have only 60–80% of the muscle mass they had at 30. A big reason why is anabolic resistance. As we get older, muscle becomes less responsive to amino acids, one of the key signals for building and maintaining muscle. This is where resistance training becomes non-negotiable. It's one of the main signals that tells muscle to grow. And just as importantly, it helps re-sensitize muscle to amino acids, so the body responds to protein more like it did when you were younger.

I think it's fair to say Isaacman is set to usher in a new era for commercial space companies and I believe Rocket Lab is best positioned to benefit from it.
