Surely this is common sense… Earlier this year, I was successful in my campaign to increase the ridiculously short sentences handed down to three vile grooming gang members in our area. I did this by referring their sentences to the Attorney General via the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) Scheme. Shockingly, many victims and families are not even told about the ULS scheme and that they can challenge sentences that are obviously too lenient. That is why in Parliament, I am campaigning for a new mandatory duty so that victims and their families are always informed about the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme. I look forward to meeting with the Solicitor General to take this campaign forward.

The vile acts of abuse committed against these children is pure evil. The Liberals have an opportunity to invoke the notwithstanding clause and overturn this egregious court decision but they remain silent and have chosen to do nothing. It’s disgusting. Too many rapists are being given lenient sentences. David Lammy is proposing an arbitrary target to reduce the number of young people in custody. He also wants to treat under 25s like children in sentencing. Labour want to give 16 year olds the vote, yet believe a 23-year-old rapist is too young to be held accountable for his actions. It was shameful the Government won’t refer his sentence for being unduly lenient.
