The institute has started parallel BTech sections in English and Hindi, taught by the same instructors with identical syllabi, labs, and assessments. National Education Policy 2020 emphasises integrating environmental awareness and sensitivity towards its conservation and sustainable development among students. In alignment with this vision, under #EkPedMaaKeNaam initiative, School Education Department of Tripura turned this heartfelt sentiment into meaningful action through Mission 555. Under this initiative, 555 schools were transformed through student-led tree plantation drives, where students not only planted saplings in honour of their mothers but also mother nature. On the eve of Teachers' Day, I paid my heartfelt tribute today to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan at Dhanadhanya Auditorium. I also extended my sincere respect to all the teachers and educators who have illuminated our lives with knowledge for generations. I am proud to have acknowledged the extraordinary contributions of 73 teachers in the field of education in Bengal at this grand event by presenting them with the 'Siksha Ratna' award. Additionally, 12 schools in the State were honoured as 'Sera Vidyalaya' for their overall excellence in academics and sports. Today, we also honoured 387 meritorious students who secured a place in the merit lists of this year's Madhyamik, Higher Secondary, Alim, Fazil, High-Madrasah, ICSE, ISC, CBSE (Class 10 and 12), Joint Entrance, and Vocational examinations. This included meritorious tribal and Scheduled Caste students, who were also felicitated. I once again extend my best wishes to all of them. Our 'Ma-Mati-Manush' government has introduced various scholarships and other benefits so that the students of Bengal don't have to worry about their education. 93 lakh girls are now part of the. ‘Kanyashree’ program. We have provided approximately Rs. 16,000 crore to these girls under this programme. More than 1.25 crore scholarships have been given to tribal and scheduled caste students under ‘Shikkhashree’ scheme. Under 'Aikyashree' and other minority scholarships, approximately 4.56 crore scholarships have been provided to minority students at a cost of Rs. 9,747 cr. About 40,000 minority students have also received Rs. 316 crore in educational loans. 6.65 lakh scholarships have been given to OBC students under the ‘Medhashree’ program. 36.55 lakh students have received Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship. 53 lakh students have received smartphones under 'Taruner Swapna' at a cost of Rs. 5,300 crore. We have already distributed more than 1.38 crore bicycles under ‘Sabooj Sathi’ with a total cost of approximately Rs. 4,730 crore. The distribution of bicycles has started this year as well, and an additional 12.50 lakh students will receive them at a cost of Rs. 525 crore. Approximately Rs. 10,000 crore has been spent to provide students with free textbooks, school uniforms, school bags, and shoes. We have seen the benefits of our work. The dropout rate has significantly decreased, from the primary to the higher secondary levels. In 2011, the dropout rate at the higher secondary level was 17.48%, which has now dropped to 3.30%. Today, I also unveiled the book, 'The Gems of Bengal, 2025', a compilation of the life stories and aspirations of the State's meritorious students. This day has become more memorable for me for a very personal reason, also. I once had the opportunity to be a part of the noble profession of teaching. From 1975 to 1978, for three years, I taught at Manmatha Nath Nandan Boys and Girls School (now known as Bhawanipur Modern School). Today, the school's headmistress, Dr. Srilata De, and one of the members of the school's management committee, Mr. Biswanath Basu, honoured me as a former teacher. This recognition brings me great pride and joy. Finally, I would like to tell my young students: apart from being good at your studies, you must become good human beings as well. You must work for the betterment of the nation, for the people, and for Bengal. Remember, true intelligence builds society. All teachers of Bengal are our pride. It is with deep regret that I inform you that the J&K government has rejected our Bill on Sheikh-ul-Alam University in today’s Assembly session. I moved the Bill in the Legislative Assembly with the goal of establishing the region’s first private university. The proposed Sheikh-ul-Alam University Bill for Pulwama (Bill No. 9 of 2025) was, however, turned down by the government. Despite my persistent appeals and efforts to have it considered, Education Minister and the J&K government rejected the proposal. In the decisive vote, NC MLAs opposed the Bill, halting what could have been a landmark step for higher education in Pulwama. Currently, J&K has no private universities, while India has over 500. Our students face immense challenges, including safety concerns and high costs of education. Over the past ten years, 500 cases of hate crimes against students have been reported. Many students spend more than 1 lakh per year, and around 2 lakh students from J&K are studying outside the Union Territory. We urgently need to build strong institutions here in J&K so that our students can access quality education locally, overcome crises, and pursue their ambitions without facing such challenges.
