The Government says it wants to cut NHS waiting lists. The NHS could carry out up to 1.5 million more operations every year. But here’s what the politicians aren’t telling you. The NHS is short of 2,256 anaesthetists; the specialist doctors who make most operations possible. Yet thousands of doctors are trying to become anaesthetists but can’t, because the Government only funds a limited number of specialty training places. Last year, 6,770 doctors applied for just 539 core anaesthetic training places. Without those places, doctors cannot complete specialist training and the NHS cannot grow the workforce it needs. The Royal College of Anaesthetists says hospitals already have the capacity to train hundreds more anaesthetists every year; if the Government funds the additional training places. Patients are waiting. Doctors are ready to train. The Government needs to stop limiting funded specialty training places and invest in the workforce the NHS and the public need.

While you wait hours to be seen in A&E and weeks for a GP appointment, NHS doctors are being forced into unemployment. This year, 40,000 doctors applied for 10,000 training jobs. Without these training jobs, doctors cannot progress to become the GPs and Consultants the NHS desperately needs. What the public isn’t told is that these training jobs are deliberately capped by the Government. Catastrophic workforce planning has created a farcical situation; patients are crying out to see a doctor, while thousands of fully trained doctors are locked out of the NHS. This year, 14 doctors competed for every single A&E training job. Five doctors competed for every GP training job. The NHS is turning away dedicated, talented doctors at the door. This is one of the reasons resident doctors went out on strike and why we are reballoting. We are training doctors at enormous personal cost; years of study, debt, night shifts, missed family moments, and then telling them there is no place for them in the NHS. This is not just a workforce failure. It is a moral one.

While patients wait years for surgery and months to see a specialist, Wes Streeting and Keir Starmer are threatening to cut the number of NHS specialist doctor training jobs. Most people don’t realise this, but doctors can’t just become Consultants, Surgeons or GPs on their own. They have to get a speciality training job first. These jobs are controlled and capped by the Government. So when the Government talks about cutting speciality training jobs, what they are really talking about is cutting the number of future specialist doctors in this country. At a time when the NHS already doesn’t have enough doctors. At a time when waiting lists are in the millions. At a time when patients are waiting months just to see a specialist and years for operations. Cutting the number of specialist training jobs will not fix the NHS. It will make waiting lists longer. It will make it harder to see a doctor. It will make the NHS worse for patients. Threatening to reduce the number of future doctors while patients are already struggling to access care is not just a deliberate workforce policy decision.
