NEWS: NVIDIA just announced Alpamayo, what CEO Jensen Huang calls the world’s first thinking, reasoning autonomous vehicle AI, launching on U.S. roads later this year, starting with the Mercedes CLA. Jensen: "It's trained end-to-end. Literally from camera in to actuation out; It reasons what action it is about to take, the reason by which is came about that action, and the trajectory." Alpamayo introduces Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models, which enable self-driving systems to interpret what they see, reason about complex driving scenarios, and generate driving actions. The platform includes large reasoning models, simulation tools for testing rare and edge-case scenarios, and open datasets for training and validation. NVIDIA says the approach improves transparency, safety, and robustness in autonomous systems, particularly in complex real-world environments, and supports progress toward higher levels of vehicle autonomy: "With a 10-billion-parameter architecture, Alpamayo 1 uses video input to generate trajectories alongside reasoning traces, showing the logic behind each decision. Developers can adapt Alpamayo 1 into smaller runtime models for vehicle development, or use it as a foundation for AV development tools such as reasoning-based evaluators and auto-labeling systems. Nvidia has just announced Alpamayo 2 Super, an open 34 billion parameter reasoning vision-language-action model designed to accelerate the development of autonomous vehicles. This new model combines the NVIDIA Cosmos 3 Super reasoning model with a 2 billion parameter diffusion-based action expert model, and is post trained with reinforcement learning. The model can return multiple outputs: future trajectory plans, reasoning traces, grounded answers to questions about the scenes, and auto label generation. The model weights are now available for anyone to download on Hugging Face, and the inference code has been posted to GitHub. Distilled models can be deployed commercially without any further permission from Nvidia, and model outputs carry no license conditions. Automakers can distill down a compact version of this model that can run on the Nvidia computer in the car. Major kudos to Nvidia and Jensen Huang for advancing the state of the industry by releasing this as an open model with permissive licensing. Jensen isn't just paying lip service to the idea of open models, Nvidia is actually contributing to the ecosystem — and it's great for their business, because it helps sell more Thor computers that go in the car. Anyone can go download the model and play with it. If you do, let me know what you think. Autonomous driving with Chain of Thought - autopilot thinking out loud in text! LINGO-1 is the most interesting work I've read in autodriving for a while. Before: perception -> driving action After: perception -> textual reasoning -> action LINGO-1 trains a video-language model that comments on the ongoing scene. You can ask it to explain its decisions ("why are you stopped?") and planning ("what are you gonna do next?"). The explicit reasoning step comes with key benefits: - Explainability: driving models are no longer a mysterious blackbox that you pray for safety. - Counterfactuals: it's able to imagine scenarios that are not in the training data, and reason through how to handle them correctly. - Long-tail programming: there are soooo many edge cases in driving. It's impossible to have good data coverage on everything. Instead of collecting 1000s of examples to "neural program" a case, you can now have a human teacher write prompts to explain a handful of examples. LINGO-1 is closely related to a few works in game AI: - MineDojo (my team's work at NVIDIA, learns a reward model that aligns Minecraft gameplay videos with their transcripts. The model, called "MineCLIP", is able to ground commentary text in the video pixels. - Thought Cloning (Jeff Clune): pixel -> language -> action loop in gridworlds.

AI for robotics has some monumental challenges, like high dimensionality and reasoning with the physical world. Ashok Elluswamy, AI lead at Tesla, thinks the hardest problem is Evaluation. - Loss isn't a perfect indicator of Policy Neural Network's quality. - Testing in the real world for all the long-tail failure cases is not possible. To solve the evaluation challenge, Tesla has developed a World Simulator Model. It is trained on state and action pairs, so for a given current camera feed and current action, the model generates the next frame in the cameras. Once the world simulation is good enough, it can be hooked up to the policy network for a closed-loop simulation. In this setup, the model generates the next video frames, and based on those, the policy network comes up with the next action, which feeds back into the world simulation; this continuous loop creates a coherent simulation. The world simulation neural network is not just applicable to self-driving but also to humanoids, because Tesla trains it on common data. The examples show Optimus navigating or manipulating inside the world simulation, with all the pixels being generated by the world simulation model. The robotic agents can be tested in an accurately reproduced edge case and in other potential variations of the same edge case.

As the ability to reason at scale emerges, they take on a new role: the ground truth for testing what reasoning models produce, and the environment in which those models operate, get feedback, and improve. Tara, our autonomous research agent, is embedded in our ever-expanding datasets, lab-generated and synthetic, and built to test and evolve the hypotheses frontier models generate, matching the pace at which they produce new ideas. By keeping those models grounded in a vast space of high-precision biological data, we believe we can compound biological reasoning and close the impedance mismatch between hypothesis generation and validation.

General Intuition hopes to use world models to create embodied AI—machines that can reason and act in the real world. But other companies are also pushing the frontier in this space. Odyssey ML today announced a multi-agent world model, Agora-1. Their launch video shows four participants interacting with a real-time world model simulation of GoldenEye, a first-person shooter for the N64. Breaking news: Cosmos 3 is here. They are attempting to do something completely new 🤯 Why is Physical AI much harder than building a chatbot? Understanding the world is not enough, robots need to predict it and act inside it. That's the idea behind NVIDIA Cosmos 3: → Reasoning model understands what's happening from video, images, text, and actions. → World model generates future states of the environment. → Action model generates the actions needed to achieve a goal. Previous systems often stitched these capabilities together using separate models. Cosmos 3 combines them into a single architecture with two components: ▪️ Reasoner Tower Analyzes observations and builds an understanding of objects, motion, interactions, and physical context. ▪️ Generator Tower Uses that understanding to generate future videos and action sequences that obey physical constraints. So Cosmos 3 moves from: Perception → Model A Prediction → Model B Actions → Model C to: Perception + Prediction + Actions → One unified system. The goal is to make robots, autonomous vehicles, and smart environments better at answering three questions: 1. What is happening? 2. What will happen next? 3. What should I do?
