Would this be good for baking the object onto the un OCD'd mesh?

Well, erasing is just a way of control; it has nothing to do with the baking process. However, you can certainly bake all those details (same as if you would bake them after sculpting in ZBrush). See my other posts:

You can invert the mask and 'paint' the damage instead.
