Man Fatally Shot by APD Officers After Wounding Two in Downtown Albuquerque Albuquerque, New Mexico — On July 3, 2026, at approximately 11:53 p.m. in downtown Albuquerque, 41-year-old Stephen Griego was involved in a confrontation that ended with his death after officers shot him. On June 20, 2026, Griego reported to Albuquerque Police Department officers that he had been pepper-sprayed and had his cellphone stolen during a downtown altercation. Officers treated him for pepper-spray exposure. Griego later posted a social media video referencing the incident and stating he would be prepared in the future. On July 3, Griego was riding an electric scooter when he entered a verbal dispute with 40-year-old Juan Ortega. Ortega shoved and struck Griego. Griego moved around a street barricade, pulled a handgun from his waistband, and fired two rounds. The first struck 38-year-old Richard Thyberg, who had become involved. The second struck Ortega in the hip. Neither Ortega nor Thyberg was armed. Officers assigned to the downtown area heard the gunfire, ran to the scene, and ordered Griego to stop. Four officers—Sgt. The suspects tried to steal the man's necklace, and a struggle ensued. One of the robbers then open fired and shot the man in the arm. First responders transported the victim to Bellevue Hospital, where he is in stable condition. Bronx: East 149th Street & Walton Avenue, a violent man released on parole just months ago is now wanted after three people were shot and two were killed in separate incidents across the Bronx and Brooklyn. The suspect, 31-year-old Jesus Acosta, was released in April after serving 10 years behind bars for a 2015 Harlem subway shooting. Early Tuesday morning, Acosta walked into a bodega on East 149th Street & Walton Avenue, opened fire and struck a 33-year-old customer. He then went behind the counter and emptied the register as a frightened cashier lay on the floor trying to avoid the gunfire. Acosta fled with the cash. The victim was transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/Lincoln, where he later died from his injuries. NYPD Chief of Detectives from the NYPD 44th Precinct right away got to work and linked the case to another shooting in Brooklyn. Just after midnight Sunday, two men were shot inside American Best Wings and Pizza near Rockaway Avenue & Newport Street in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn. Officers from the NYPD 73rd Precinct found a 44-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head and a 39-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg. Both victims were transported to Brookdale Hospital. The 44-year-old man was later pronounced dead, while the 39-year-old remains in stable condition.
