Two years since this conference were an Arise Tv Journalist asked Umahi about the EIA report of the coast road project and Umahi attempted to clown the lady and write off the question. Today, The coastal road is now causing serious flooding problems for Lekki Peninsula residents. This could have been avoided if Umahi had listened to the concern of many Nigerians in regard to the environmental impact of the project instead of serving his political boss. Mahmoud Adegbite Olakunle Adegbite ; the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen; Lagos State Taskforce Chairman, CSP Adebayo Akerele; Managing Director LAWMA Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, PhD and other Directors from the Ministry, I inspected the ongoing removal of illegal structures along the Lagos–Okokomaiko–Badagry Expressway. The exercise is being carried out by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), LAWMA, and other relevant stakeholders. The expansive road median was deliberately constructed by the Lagos State Government to accommodate the Lagos Rail Mass Transit project. As a major gateway into Nigeria from other West African countries, this corridor is of significant economic and strategic importance and reflects the image of our state. It is therefore unacceptable for such critical public infrastructure, built with taxpayers’ resources, to be occupied by illegal traders and other unauthorised occupants. We want to assure Lagosians that the State Government will sustain regular monitoring and enforcement along this corridor. A permanent patrol team will be deployed to ensure that illegal occupants do not return, while preserving the integrity and intended purpose of this vital infrastructure. #ZeroToleranceLagos

Many people don’t know this, but before construction of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway began, a new Makoko-like settlement had already started forming along that corridor. The highway construction cleared that entire stretch, opening it up to what is now a beachfront. Some of the people still left are the ones seen around the coastal highway at night. If enforcement is not sustained, there’s a real risk of regrouping and the emergence of another informal settlement. The entire stretch now protected by shoreline works behind Orchid Road was once their settlement, as shown in the first video.
