During raids on factories in Roodepoort and Johannesburg this week, 54 undocumented foreign nationals were taken into custody by the Department of Home Affairs, SAPS, and City of Johannesburg officials. Most of the people detained at a steel manufacturing facility in Roodepoort were Malawians, but there were also people from China and Zimbabwe. According to Deputy Minister Njabulo Nzuza, employers were also the target of the operation.

Today we where in Johannesburg CBD as the Gauteng Provincial Gov switched on street lights in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD) as part of the CBD Revitalisation Programme launched earlier today by Premier Panyaza Lesufi and the Gauteng Provincial Government, working together with Municipalities. The fountain at the Gauteng Legislature has been brought back to operation. You will see the colorful lights on the building of the Gauteng Legislature. The beginning of the restoration of street lights will take place from today. With some of the brightest spot lights to be installed on buildings or street poles. The clean up of the CBDs and inner cities has been taking place and will continue. CBDs in Johannesburg, Roodepoort, Tshwane, Hammanskraal, Germiston, Kempton Park, Tembisa, Vereeniging, Meyerton, and Krugersdorp have been selected as pilot sites. City of Joburg

Yesterday, we removed illegal structures attached to a church building in Small Street during our by-law enforcement operation. Today, we returned to investigate what was happening inside the building and discovered that shops were operating from the church basement. This demonstrates the level of lawlessness and illegal occupation taking place in parts of our inner city. We will continue to act decisively to enforce by-laws, restore order, and reclaim Johannesburg precinct by precinct. No space in our city can be allowed to operate outside the law.

With the G20 Summit now finished, many are demanding the right to return to their trading spots, even if it means continuing illegally, because they say they cannot survive without daily income. Vendors argue that they have families to feed and that the delays in reopening trading spaces are pushing them deeper into poverty. “We just want to work.
