That is why we are here today to enforce compliance with the law. We will continue this process, precinct by precinct, and we want to send a clear message to all property owners with illegal structures: we are coming. Any unlawful structure or illegal activity will be dealt with in accordance with the law. Our objective is simple: to restore law and order in the inner city and reclaim Johannesburg for its residents. This operation forms part of our broader programme to reclaim and revitalise the inner city.✊✊

The Johannesburg High Court was clear in its judgment: all illegal structures inside Marble Towers were to be shut down and removed, and the building brought into full compliance with safety regulations. The Court further ordered that all non-compliant structures must not be occupied or accessed by any person. Our return to Marble Towers has revealed a disturbing disregard for this court order. We found some of the very structures the Court declared unlawful still operating and being accessed. This is a serious violation of the Court’s judgment and places lives at risk. Property owners cannot continue to ignore the law while endangering residents, workers and members of the public. The City of Johannesburg will act decisively to enforce compliance with the Court order. No one is above the law, and we will continue reclaiming our inner city, one building at a time. #ReimaginingJoburg #InnerCityRejuvenation #RuleOfLaw

Yesterday, we removed illegal structures attached to a church building in Small Street during our by-law enforcement operation. Today, we returned to investigate what was happening inside the building and discovered that shops were operating from the church basement. This demonstrates the level of lawlessness and illegal occupation taking place in parts of our inner city. We will continue to act decisively to enforce by-laws, restore order, and reclaim Johannesburg precinct by precinct. No space in our city can be allowed to operate outside the law.
