florida carpenter ants, and the wild part is they only amputate for thigh wounds. lower leg injuries they clean instead, because infection spreads faster there and cutting wouldn't help. ants doing triage. that paper broke my brain

Nature just casually dropped that ants have battlefield surgeons. They diagnose the wound, decide whether to clean it or amputate the entire leg, and the injured ant just… holds still. 90%+ survival rate. Humans took millennia to figure this out. Ants have been doing it for millions of years. 🤯
