I watched this live when it happened. Plane circled for hours to burn off fuel and lighten the load before attempting to land.

I wouldn’t call that a crash landing. It was a very good landing with what was available to the pilots. Pilots call this an emergency landing. The aircraft did not crash. I once was forced to land a US Air Force fighter-bomber aircraft with NO LANDING GEAR EXTENDED. Touched down perfectly and slid into the fire-retardant foam laid down by the fire department. It was not called a crash landing.

That pilot landed that jet, like a boss. Not only did he get everyone down safely, but he saved that aircraft from being a total loss. He should get a nice bonus check for being that good.

I was on a plane that did an emergency landing. One of the wheels was not coming out. We all prepped for a crash landing. Back when smoking was allowed on flights. I was about 12 yo. I was calm but mom was smoking with the gay steward who looked like Richard Simmons.

That was JetBlue Flight 292 on Sept 21, 2005. It took off from Burbank bound for JFK, but the nose landing gear jammed 90 degrees sideways right after takeoff. They diverted to LAX (longer runways), circled 3+ hours to burn fuel, then Capt. Scott Burke executed a flawless emergency landing on runway 25L—keeping the nose elevated as long as possible. Sparks flew, but no injuries to 146 aboard. Plane was repaired and flew again.

Lived in Huntington Beach at the time.The plane had taken off from Burbank.Pilot realized the landing gear was stuck at 90 degrees.They flew past Long Beach airport to get visional on it.Then flew over ocean for 2 hrs to burn fuel. It was captivating.Passengers watched it live!😱

They did. I remember watching this live. Every news outlet was covering it, and the crew disabled the TV screens in the chair backs so the passengers couldn’t watch themselves (potentially) crash…

This gives me full body chills! I had a crash landing exactly like this in a Learjet once. Nose gear didn’t come down. We were supposed to land at Megs Filed private airport in Chicago but rerouted to O’Hare for the longer runway. We buzzed the tower to get confirmation, then circled for 30 min while they lined the entire runway with emergency vehicles. There is something comical about flying so close to the tower you can see the air traffic controller’s faces. Not fun was breaking through the clouds and seeing a sea of flashing lights from the runway lined with EMS and fire trucks- was terrifying. Two of the firetrucks were spraying an arc of fire retardant foam like a massive car wash over the runway that was supposed to slow us down and keep the plane from exploding. Once you accept you might die, wrapped in fire retardant blankets and just waiting for the moment of fate going one way or another- it’s very surreal. Thankfully our pilot was a bad ass ex-Air Force guy with over 200 carrier landings. He expertly maneuvered so that the plane nose hit the runway at the very last possible moment, was very rough landing with sparks and smoke, a few flames that were extinguished quickly. Side note: nose gear malfunctions are more common than you’d think.
