The MoE confirmed that exam paper was being sold for Rs.5000 on telegram channels a day before the exam date. The CBI concluded there was no actual paper leak and filed a closure report. The entire episode was traced back to a school student who doctored a screenshot of the genuine UGC-NET question paper from 18 June 2024, backdating it to 17 June, to give the impression he had obtained it a day before the exam. Upon checking, it was found that some questions matched our question paper. It was also found that on 1st and 2nd May, the PDF was available on the phones of a few people...This was against our zero tolerance policy. 2 lakh students pulled out from the Re NEET exam. Where did these 2 lakh students go? Centre told apex court that the decision to award grace marks to 1,563 candidates of NEET-UG, 2024 by #NTA has been withdrawn. "Considering the discrepancies, I filed a PIL in Supreme Court on the behalf of Students Islamic Organisation of India. Today, PIL was taken up. Recommendations of NTA grievance cell have been withdrawn and stated that those who had time lapse issue in exam will be original marks instead of grace marks. But I will call it something which has happened, which has violated the 100% integrity of the examination and our commitment to a zero-error examination. Insofar as the typical, traditional way of leak is concerned, no question paper in the form of a complete question paper has leaked anywhere. What has happened is that a guess paper in the form of a PDF was circulating on WhatsApp, and it had a few questions which were matching with the questions which were asked. When we verified whether this was in circulation before 3rd May, it was found that some of it was. So, given that a few questions were available to some people before the examination, it makes it unfair for the 22.79 lakh students who were preparing for this examination with their hardwork. So, because of that act of a few anti-social elements, we could not have compromised the interest of the honest students. So, we took this tough call of cancelling this examination and ordering a CBI inquiry."

We have suffered a massive blow. 99% of the students did not take the exam... We were supposed to receive the question paper and OMR sheet at 9.30 or 10 AM, but they were handed to us at 11.00 AM... We approached the DC and the SP, but neither gave us an answer or even spoke to us. We have been wronged. We ought to be allowed to retake the written exam. That is why we didn't take the exam today... If justice isn't served, we will hang ourselves." (02.08)

NEET CANCELLED: A Global Power That Cannot Hold A Fair Exam. In this "RAW DISPATCH FROM MY DESK" i reflect on Twenty-three lakh students or 2.3 million students who will not sleep well tonight in one of the world’s fastest rising powers. Why? Because the government finds it difficult to ensure the integrity of an exam that will decide the course of their lives. Yes, for all its pretensions of being a world power, India cannot hold an exam without the fear of a question paper leak. The NEET exam for 2026 now stands cancelled and the students will be re-tested, re-traumatised. All it took was a paltry sum of Rs 5 lakhs to ensure that cheats got hold of the paper or at least large sections of it that reportedly matched the actual NEET paper “word for word, comma for comma”. The NEET ecosystem has repeatedly faced allegations of leaks, malpractice and compromised integrity over the past decade. Investigators claim that the paper was circulating days before the exam in WhatsApp groups as a “guess paper”. The question is how did a paper allegedly copied at a printing press in Nashik travel across multiple states including Maharashtra, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar and Kerala without the NTA detecting a single breach? And if the paper is so easily accessed every so often, isn’t it evident that organised rackets have penetrated India’s examination ecosystem under the NTA’s watch? What is surprising is that not one top NTA official has offered to hold him or herself to account. Not one has offered to step down voluntarily. In fact, when the question was repeatedly asked of Abhishek Singh, the DG of the NTA , he was evasive. The point is a simple one: given the scale of its repeated failures, does the NTA understand that every leak destroys not just an exam, but public faith in the idea of fair competition itself? The Modi government prides itself on ensuring that every ordinary Indian gets a level playing field. It must now ask itself whether it is living up to that commitment made to the people.

#WATCH | Delhi: On preparedness for NEET-PG 2026 exam, Dr Abhijath Sheth, Chairperson, NMC says, "...I must assure students that they should stay away from rumours, from agents and consultants as I assure the whole student community that exam will be taken in a very safe, secure and transparent manner and since it is a computer-based examination, a lot of objective tools are there. It is very unlikely that any problem should happen with the conduct of the examination. So, I assure to all students and my best wishes to all students for this forthcoming NEET-PG exam on 30th August on behalf of National Board of Examinations of Medical Sciences, NMC and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare." He also says, "Exam Committee's view was that by reducing 20 questions, the students will get at least half an hour more to solve 180 questions. So, that is the purpose of reducing the overall number of questions. So, rather than increasing the duration of exam, the exam committee thought that it will be better if they are given less questions in the same time..."
