It's no wonder after those bills jumped by record amounts In some cases, this is according to some new analysis from the Cook County Treasurer's office, collection rates (being able to collect property taxes) in south suburban Riverdale fell by more than 11%. NextEra is trying to buy Dominion Energy, which serves the nation’s largest concentration of hyperscale data centers, and create a $400 billion energy monopoly. NextEra already owns Florida Power & Light, which built its business on gouging customers. Almost 30% of every FPL customer’s bill goes straight to profit – 2x a normal utility. In 2024, FPL cut power to 1.3 million homes. NextEra claims the merger will improve customer experiences, but the monopoly would just make it harder for regulators to hold companies accountable and lower rates.

JB Pritzker has given over $1 billion in tax breaks to data centers, at one point making us the #2 state for data centers in the country (we're #4 now). All with no guardrails to protect local residents or regulate energy or water usage. So it's no surprise to see the room packed with opponents when a 3rd data center campus was being proposed in Hoffman Estates. Pritzker and Springfield failed to pause tax incentives for data centers and failed to put in place common sense regulations that ensure data centers pay all their energy costs, limit water usage, and contribute to a property tax relief fund for Illinoisans. Vote Independent in November and we will get it done.
