JB Pritzker has given over $1 billion in tax breaks to data centers, at one point making us the #2 state for data centers in the country (we're #4 now). All with no guardrails to protect local residents or regulate energy or water usage. So it's no surprise to see the room packed with opponents when a 3rd data center campus was being proposed in Hoffman Estates. Pritzker and Springfield failed to pause tax incentives for data centers and failed to put in place common sense regulations that ensure data centers pay all their energy costs, limit water usage, and contribute to a property tax relief fund for Illinoisans. Vote Independent in November and we will get it done.

Commissioner Bill Braswell said the tax break was easy to approve. Now he wants a sales tax increase to make up for lost property-tax revenue. That would give a newly created council time to review and suggest guidelines to ensure data centers don't do things like lead to skyrocketing energy prices and water usage, which are some concerns for supporters of this measure. — The bill is expected to pass the State Senate as soon as today with bipartisan support. It will then be headed to Governor Janet Mills for her signature or her veto. Now, Mills did want an exemption for certain sites where data centers are already planned, but lawmakers voted down an amendment to make that change”

When it comes to data centers, Michigan should show the country how to do it right. That means: Data center companies, not Michigan families, pay for their own energy and grid upgrades – so rates don't go up. Data centers can't harm our water, air, or environment. Data centers pay their fair share in taxes to fund our schools, roads, and communities. Data centers are built with local union labor.
