During the show at Buckeye Lake on this day in 1991, the Dead decided to whip out a little ditty called “Reuben and Cherise” according to David Lemieux, "this was the fourth and final live Grateful Dead performance of this classic Garcia/Hunter song from the Jerry Garcia Band's 'Cats Under The Stars' album, all four of which were played in 1991." In August 1968, The Beatles released their non-album single "Hey Jude." Six months later, the Grateful Dead performed their first cover of the song as an encore at their February Fillmore East show, with Pigpen on lead vocals. They performed it one more time as an encore before retiring the song until 1985, when it was reintroduced as part of a combination with Traffic's "Dear Mr. Fantasy." This medley was performed at least 28 more times, typically with Brent Mydland on lead vocals. First introduced in the early' 70's, the track was played nearly 400 times over the span of the Dead’s active career. This rendition, captured at JFK Stadium on 7/7/89 displays the Dead with a metal grit that could have only been possible in the 80’s.
