My opinion on abortion. No one at all should be able to tell a woman that she can’t have an abortion before the 20 week mark. Here is why… - Before 20 weeks, a fetus does not have the capabilities for complex neural activity that would be required to have a subjective subconscious. Without a subjective subconscious the fetus doesn’t even know it’s alive, and doesn’t even know it exists. It can’t feel pain, have dreams or have thoughts. - Before 22 weeks, a fetus simply is not considered viable. It almost never can survive outside of the womb even with intense medical intervention. Most scientists believe that sometime around 24-28 weeks is when a subjective subconscious is formed. At this point, I think it’s absolutely wrong to have an abortion, unless the mother’s life is in danger or the likelihood of the child surviving birth is extremely small. Fact is that less than 1% of all abortions in the US occur after 21 weeks. This equates to a little over 4,000 abortions per year. Of these 4,000 (1%), over 99% of them are in instances where a mother's life is in danger or the child has severe fetal anomalies incompatible with life outside of the womb. That means that less than 0.01% (less than 40) abortions per year take place after 21 weeks in which the mother's life isn't at risk or the baby isn't going to die upon birth. Historically, the Roe v. Wade decision (1973) allowed for the right to an abortion but permitted states to impose restrictions after viability (around 24 weeks). So that's why women want to be left alone. Women make the right decision for themselves. States can outlaw abortion after 24 weeks and very few people have problems with this. The biggest reason why I think abortion should be up to the woman, under the care of a physician, is because the definition of "human life" differs depending on one's perspective. For example even many "pro-lifers" believe that a zygote, which is a fertilized egg that has not yet implanted into the uterine lining, is not yet "human life." This is why most pro-lifers are OK with birth control, even though some forms of birth control prevent the fertilized egg from implanting, thus killing off the fertilized egg. Others believe that the "heartbeat" of the embryo is what should determine the legality of abortion, even though the heartbeat in the early stages is nothing more than electrical activity within a group of cells that will eventually become the heart. Some believe that abortion should come after viability of the fetus, while others believe it should be when a fetus has a conscious awareness that it's alive. There are even some interpretations of Catholicism, that believe every act of ejaculation is supposed to be open to the possibility of creating life, which is why artificial contraception and masturbation can be considered sinful. Depending on your belief, you will have different definitions of what is right or wrong. Should politicians be able to tell men they can't ejaculate? Should they be able to tell women they can't take birth control? Should they have any right whatsoever to tell any woman when she should decide on taking actions that affect her body? Of course abortion in the final weeks of a pregnancy when the fetus is viable and the mother's life isn't at risk, is obviously wrong, but drawing the line early on is not so obvious to many people.

Did you know that late term abortion for any reason whatsoever is legal? Did you also know that every week at least one baby is born ALIVE and left to die following their own failed abortion? Not one single person who turned up the protest against the Live Births Bill answered my question about why they were there and what they were protesting against. Even the co-founder of the SA Abortion Action Coalition refused to answer my question. I think it's because there is no rational explanation for being for third trimester abortion in a scenario where the bill allows babies to be delivered alive after 28 weeks and until birth. This group of protestors would have been forced to justify why they think a mother has a right to deliver a dead baby in the third trimester and for 99% of Australians that is an extremely unreasonable thing to be justifying. I'm still shocked that the Live Births Bill failed to pass by one vote but I know that it will pass in the not too distant future. It has to. We cannot keep needlessly injecting babies with poison right up until birth and delivering them dead.
