It's official: Washington state is #1 in the United States for retail theft. And Governor Bob Ferguson vetoed a fix that was working. In 2025, the legislature earmarked $1 Million to King, Snohomish, and Spokane Counties to combat retail theft. King County used that money to hire a dedicated prosecutor, who filed 142 retail theft cases in 6 months, which is nearly triple than previously. When the funding needed to be renewed, the legislature earmarked another $500k to the program.
