The same Bollywood system that rarely gave outsiders a fair chance often forced real talent to create its own space. When doors stayed closed, outsiders didn’t complain — they worked harder, trained sharper, and broke barriers on merit. #vidyutjammwal is a perfect example. From being sidelined at home to...

The Tyranny of Merit When Rahul Gandhi spoke about the concept of merit is flawed, he means a lot of things. We are often forced to believe that success is purely based on talent and hard work, which is the foundation of meritocracy argument. Well it is not. In his book The Tyranny of Merit, famous author Michael J Sandel explains in great detail why it is not. In The Tyranny of Merit, Michael Sandel challenges the common belief that success is purely based on talent and hard work. He argues that while meritocracy, the idea that people rise in life based on their abilities, sounds fair, it actually deepens inequality and creates resentment in society. In today's world, especially in countries like the US and India, education and high-paying jobs are seen as the ultimate measures of success. Those who make it to IITs, IIMs, or top positions in multinational companies are often considered deserving of their success. But Sandel questions this thinking. Are these people truly self-made, or did they benefit from privileges like better schools, financial security, and family support? He points out that this system makes the winners feel superior and the less successful feel like failures, even when circumstances beyond their control, such as poverty or lack of opportunities, play a huge role. This divide is dangerous as it leads to frustration among those left behind, fueling anger against elites, which we have seen in political movements worldwide. Sandel also highlights how society values white-collar jobs over essential work like farming, factory labor, and delivery services, even though these roles are crucial for daily life. He argues that respect should not be tied to degrees alone but to the contribution people make to society. The book ultimately calls for a shift in mindset. Instead of glorifying individual success, we should work towards a society that values dignity in all kinds of work, provides equal opportunities, and reduces the gap between the privileged and the underprivileged. In an Indian context, this message is especially relevant. Education, caste, and wealth still play a major role in determining success. Instead of blindly following the merit narrative, we should ask if we are creating a fairer society or just making the privileged even more powerful. To talk about the tyranny of meritocracy that is being unleashed in Indian society by people having an illusion of merit requires a lot of courage. We appreciate Rahul Gandhi for being blunt about it without worrying about the back lash. We will also show you what the ancestors of today's 'the meritocratic' class did when they were the 'victims'. (1/4) Listen to Michael Sandel:

Today, I’m proud to share something we’ve been building for months - Artham, India’s first Small Language Model (SLM) built exclusively for Indian Capital Markets. We unveiled it at AWS re:Invent 2025 in Las Vegas, marking a defining milestone for India, AI, and Raise on the world stage. 🚀 This isn’t just a product launch. It’s a statement that India no longer has to rely on global AI models that were never designed to understand the depth, nuance, and realities of our markets. We can and we will build for ourselves. Artham is shaped by the realities of Indian markets — SEBI’s rulebook, NSE & BSE dynamics, corporate filings, trading cycles, investor sentiment, and the everyday language of Indian finance. Every layer is grounded in local context, built to serve Indian participants, not global assumptions. This isn’t a “global model adapted for India.” Built in India. Hosted in India. Built for India. 🇮🇳 This is a model born from India’s capital markets. At Raise Financial Services, we’ve always believed that true financial empowerment cannot come from imported solutions. It must be created on-ground, in-context, with an Indian-first mindset. Artham is our step towards making Indian finance more intelligent, more relevant, and more accessible for retail investors, traders, institutions, and the next generation of market participants. Behind this launch is a team that stayed obsessed with one thing: relevance. Relevance to the Indian investor. Relevance to the Indian market cycle. Relevance to India’s financial future. This isn’t a concept or a test model. Artham is already live in production for millions of users: • fuzz AI (AI research) • ScanX (markets insights) • Dhan - Made for Trade (trading and investing) Proud of our team. Proud of our mission. Proud to build for India. 🇮🇳 Anirudha Basak Amazon Web Services AWS Cloud India #AWSreInvent2025
