the quicker way to do calculations like these is by calculating the error 3*5=15, then subtract from 100 to get 85

Interesting how everyone does it different. Because 5x20=100 I knew doing 5x17 would give me my answer. To do 5x17, I split that into (5 x 10 = 50) + (5 x 7 = 35) = 85. All those sub-tasks I could basically do instantly by memory. So I guess the main thing is being able to divide a problem into easier steps.

100/20 is 5 -> each point is worth 5 20-17 is 3 3*5 is 15 100-15=85 no big numbers, no hard math

essentially, what we are doing is: 17 : 20 x : 100 the use the criss cross method, x * 20 = 17 *100 20x = 1700 x = 1700/20 or 170/2 which becomes 85 hope this was helpful

The true easiest way to do this is to just divide 17 by 2. Multiplying it by 5 is harder than dividing by 2 and moving the decimal point

To scale from [0,20] to [0,100], you multiply by five (100/20 = 5). 17*5 = 10*5 + 7*5 = 50 + 35 = 85

I don't know how the kids are learning it these days, but my brain thinks: 1/20 is 5% because 100/20=5 3 of those for 3/20 is 15% take that away from 100% for 17 out of 20 and it's 85%
