Ukraine received the first batch of energy equipment from the German Government as part of the winter emergency support package The emergency support package includes: 2 cogeneration plants, 300 solar stations, 375 battery storage units for backup power supply, 15 mobile hybrid generators, 10 pellet heating systems, and 45 units of construction equipment for urgent repair work. This will help provide light and heat to over 86,000 people in Kyiv.

Because of Russian shelling, the plant has been cut off from power, disconnected from the electrical grid, and is being supplied with electricity by diesel generators. This is extraordinary. The generators and the plant were not designed for this, have never operated in this mode for long, and we already have information that one generator has failed. It is Russian shelling that prevents repair of the power lines to the plant and the restoration of basic safety. This is a threat to everyone – no terrorist in the world has ever dared to do to a nuclear plant what Russia is doing. And it is right that the world does not stay silent.

The plan instead is to extract it on site, burn it in a local power plant, and use that electricity to mine bitcoin. The energy will be consumed at the source, because that route is simpler and more profitable. Taxes, regulation and grid constraints all add friction. The gas could power homes. It isn't. Because burning it on site makes more money. That is a damning indictment of UK energy policy.
