It was the first Mario game in a 3D world, and remains the most successful game ever for the Nintendo 64 with over 11 million (!) copies sold. Being a huge Super Mario fan from the NES era, seeing Mario come to live in a 3D world was incredible. Once again, the goal is to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, a battle for the ages. To this day, it's my favorite Mario game. Did you play (and finish) it back then?

When I heard Daytona USA was coming to the Sega Saturn, I sold all my other consoles and saved up for it. Finally got the Saturn and Daytona running at home—total mind-blow 🤯. Sure, it wasn’t quite arcade-perfect, but just being able to play it at home was enough. By the time Dreamcast came around, the port was almost flawless. Fun fact: Saturn was almost done as a 2D machine, but after seeing PlayStation’s 3D power, Sega tweaked it late—3D performance ended up a bit lacking. Irony is, the same Sega that pioneered 3D with Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter thought consoles weren’t ready yet.

I just opened Sonic Superstars to do some casual playthroughs of some stages and I’m always impressed at just how excellent the levels in this game are everytime I come back to it. Never has a Sonic level gimmick been this fun and impactful for moment to moment gameplay

Nobody understands how much I love Sonic Unleashed. I had my parents get me a XBOX 360 just for this game. It and Sonic '06 are the only 2 games I've ever bought for it. It's actually surreal to finally experience this game in its true glory.

The original PlayStation’s impressive 3D capabilities have somewhat overshadowed it over the years, but SEGA was actually a company that was deeply committed to 3D gaming from the very beginning. In arcades, they were producing 3D games on a completely different level from their competitors, and they were constantly experimenting with new ideas on the home console side as well. If you look at the Mega Drive version of Virtua Racing, SEGA managed to bring over an arcade-quality experience by adding a special processor directly into the cartridge. Seeing that success, they likely realized that a dock-on device with its own dedicated hardware could allow the Mega Drive to handle 3D games—especially SEGA’s arcade-style 3D titles. That idea eventually became the 32X. At the time, the Mega Drive (Genesis) was incredibly popular in North America, so the concept definitely had potential. The problem was its timing. The 32X launched around the same period as SEGA’s next-generation console, the Sega Saturn, which created confusion in the market. If it had been released even a year earlier, giving players earlier access to games like Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, it might have achieved much stronger sales. And by the way, the Mega Drive shown in the video is a custom modification that combines the console and the 32X into a single integrated unit. 😆
