The Shawshank Redemption was released (pun intended) on this day in 1994. It underperformed initially but gained critical and commercial success through home video. Nominated for seven Oscars, it won none. It now tops IMDb's Greatest Movies list. Turns out, Hope can set you free.

Morgan Freeman narrating just made it so much better. I never read the book so I couldn't care less about character swaps.

Recently travelled to Mansfield Ohio to visit filming spots. Highly highly recommend it!

You look back and wonder why it never won even a single Oscar.. the depth of the film in the script, the score (stoic theme gives me goosebumps everytime) ajd the screenplay.. its just simply brilliant.

Shawshank, Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump in the same year. Dear lord, we were lucky.

My favorite scene is the end when they meet up at the ocean. That was filmed in St. Croix and I often went to that spot while working recovery efforts for Hurrican Maria. Very secluded location.

The author himself, Stephen King, talking about The Shawshank Redemption & money left in a Maine field for Red.

I got threatened by Stephen King's New York lawyers when I was a student...

You can’t leave it there. Regale us with the details my good man…

It’s my favorite movie. It was actually re released in the theaters after its 7 nominations. I went and watched it three times. It inspired me to write a novel.

Congratulations on your novel.

Truly a masterpiece! It helps me in my trouble times during the Covid pandemic. As Andy said: “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”

Am I the only in America who has not seen this movie yet? I better get on the ball.

“I think a man working outdoors feels more like a man with a bottle of suds” 🍻On my top ten for sure. Love this scene 🎬 🥰

I'n setting here and I can litterally smell the tar on that roof.

Only movie when I’m flipping through the channels if it’s on, I watch it no matter where it is at that point of the movie

Decent movie but completely overrated.

Forgot how great that scene was.

It gives you a warm glow, doesn't it.

Def put a smile on my face (esp the end when Andy is sitting there smiling..."just to feel human again."). So good. Morgan Freeman was born for those roles.

It's good, but honestly has become a bit overrated with time. It's definitely not even the best Stephen King adaptation. Stand By Me is better, so is The Green Mile, so is Misery, so is The Shining, so is Carrie.

A great scene, but I can't help but think that Andy could have phrased things a bit more carefully and not ended up teetering on the edge of the roof.

Not sure a perfectly phrased sentence, a pat on the back and a firm handshake would've created as much drama, tension and a satisfying pay-off.

Great movie….”hope” inspired Andy and it would do us all well to hope for the best for our country as well as yours. I like to revisit this one once a year 🥰

The title has a lot to answer for:

In the book, Red was actually Irish.

He also killed his wife, his neighbour's wife, and his neighbours son. They skipped over that part in the film.

One of my top three films of all time.

I’ve seen literally 100 better films. Keep in mind the children that vote on IMDB haven’t even seen a movie before 1970. That’s vile

My favourite film of all time, genuinely didn’t realise it hadn’t won a oscar

Get busy livin' or Get busy dyin' Absolutely god damn right!

I was lucky enough to watch it in a theater.

I have argued it’s a top 5 all-time movie when factoring cinematography, score, story, character development, emotional triumph, etc…

Terrible movie, message that is. All the inmates are good guys and the evil Warden is of course, a corrupt Christian..

Best movie Ever ❤️

Thanks, needed that today 🤝

My pleasure, Greg

Legend

One of the best pictures to ever Grace film. Magnificent.

A triple murderer escapes jail and runs away. Wonder what Andy’s dead wife, dead neighbor and dead neighbor’s son would think. You people have lost your ever loving minds.

I thought the musical score should have won. No luck there. Tough year!

So crazy how this film never won anything.

Good ol reliable Academy Awards voters.

This movie doesn't need an Oscar for recognition or validation.

Thank you Sir, top 3.👍
