It's hard to comprehend how steep and how fast a Shuttle approach was. We used to joke if you dropped a brick midfield from the same height of the Shuttle, the Shuttle would beat it to the ground, and it was true. This cockpit video makes it real. Who's wants to do that?🙋‍♂️

Trivia- While most 747s could easily fly NY-London, the 747 that transported the Shuttle had much " smaller wings" due to the extra weight and aerodynamics for the piggybacker. While carrying the orbiter, the Jumbo had its range cut to 1,000 miles, with speed and ceiling limited to just Mach .6 and 15,000 feet. The limited range meant returning a shuttle to Florida took as long as three days.

Once it dropped out of orbit, it became a heavy glider, relying only on gravity, aerodynamics, and the pilot's precision. There were no second chances. Continuation from previous post. Following the 1986 Challenger disaster, NASA completely revamped the crew's bailout options. The ejection seats were scrapped in favor of the slidewire and pole bailout system. If the shuttle was forced to make a controlled glide without a runway, astronauts would extend a 2.5-meter carbon-fiber pole from the side hatch. By attaching a lanyard to the pole, they would slide away from the orbiter to clear the left wing before pulling their parachutes.👀

A China Eastern pilot used the A350's thrust reverser to reverse the aircraft on the bay as it hit the jet bridge. Using the thrust reverser of an A350 to reverse the aircraft would be the first time I have seen this. 2 May 2026, Shanghai Airport. Why did he use the thrust reverser twice? Why not just set the brake after the first time?
