The Shuttle Training Aircraft was a Grumman Gulfstream II modified to simulate a gliding Shuttle orbiter: It still needed to drop gear and reverse thrust to match the terrible L/D of the orbiter on descent.

It's hard to comprehend how steep and how fast a Shuttle approach was. We used to joke if you dropped a brick midfield from the same height of the Shuttle, the Shuttle would beat it to the ground, and it was true. This cockpit video makes it real. Who's wants to do that?🙋‍♂️

Trivia- While most 747s could easily fly NY-London, the 747 that transported the Shuttle had much " smaller wings" due to the extra weight and aerodynamics for the piggybacker. While carrying the orbiter, the Jumbo had its range cut to 1,000 miles, with speed and ceiling limited to just Mach .6 and 15,000 feet. The limited range meant returning a shuttle to Florida took as long as three days.

In order to test the space shuttle Enterprise's landing capabilities, it was carried to 24,000 feet atop a modified 747, and blasted off using explosive charges.

Nothing beats this iconic sight — the Space Shuttle Endeavour hitching a ride atop a Boeing 747 over Los Angeles on September 21, 2012. Escorted by NASA F/A-18s and an F-15, the orbiter made its final flight to the California Science Center. What a farewell flyover!

Unpopular take: the Soviet Shuttle was objectively better engineered than the American one. -Full autopilot (flew perfectly with no crew in 1988) -No dangerous solid boosters mounted on the side -Energia could launch 30 tons WITHOUT the orbiter -Superior hexagonal tiles that didn’t fall off NASA’s Shuttle killed 14 people. Buran/Ptichka killed zero. America didn’t win the shuttle race. The USSR just ran out of money before round two.

After reentering Earth's atmosphere at hypersonic speed, the Space Shuttle had no engines to help it land. Once it dropped out of orbit, it became a heavy glider, relying only on gravity, aerodynamics, and the pilot's precision. There were no second chances. The shuttle had a steep descent, a narrow landing window, and just one shot at the runway.

Fun fact: if you put “the chair” in the orbiter, Wally will show up in it, almost like a summoning seat. Or, maybe he was just tired and needed to sit down. Tough to say.

Christa McAuliffe was a teacher who was selected from more than 11,000 applicants to become the first teacher to fly in space. This footage shows the semi-finalist from the same competition, James Rowley, reacting live to the 1986 explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger, the space shuttle he nearly won the opportunity to ride on. All 7 occupants of the Challenger space shuttle perished, including Christa McAuliffe.

Continuation from previous post. Following the 1986 Challenger disaster, NASA completely revamped the crew's bailout options. The ejection seats were scrapped in favor of the slidewire and pole bailout system. If the shuttle was forced to make a controlled glide without a runway, astronauts would extend a 2.5-meter carbon-fiber pole from the side hatch. By attaching a lanyard to the pole, they would slide away from the orbiter to clear the left wing before pulling their parachutes.👀
