Since then, the site has only needed single-digit gallons of top-off. That’s less than the average U.S. swimming pool, which holds 15-20k gallons. The media narrative around data center water use is very disconnected from how modern closed-loop systems actually work.

Today on CNBC Power Lunch, TeraWulf CEO Paul Prager summed up the AI/HPC bottleneck perfectly. Brian Sullivan: “Is there any indication that companies needing compute power are dialing back? I take partial blame along with the rest of the industry. We did not communicate the difference between a data center built in Virginia 20 years ago and what we're building now. Most data centers today don't use more water than a golf course, and so that's a huge package of misinformation. Additionally, everybody has to bring their own power. The major benefit to that is we need more power in America. Not just data centers, we need overall power. In Utah for example, I have to bring my own power and build power not only for the data center, but to give back to the community to keep power costs down. That's a major benefit. That's gonna happen across the country.

Today I sat down with John McQueeney, State Representative for House District 97 in Tarrant County, Texas and member of the State Affairs Committee covering power grid and electric policy. In the last six weeks alone, John's committee has run three interim data center hearings. He is also drafting the Data Center Responsibility Act for the January 2027 session - the bill that will set the framework for how Texas handles the data center build-out for a generation. Texas has 440 gigawatts of applications in the queue against roughly 110 gigawatts of current peak capacity. "In the press release, we said that the lease payments will be backed by investment grade credit support. And we chose that language very carefully.. because one of two things is going to happen. First off, Anthropic, just like OpenAI and others uses three primary chip providers. NVIDIA, Amazon, and Google. One of those three will be providing the chips for this data center. So we will either do something similar that we've done in the past where one of those investment grade providers provides credit support to the project because they're selling tens of billions of dollars of chips into the project.
