If the skittles were absent from the bag it aligns with my theory that he may have used Cora to answer Lindsay's phone while he was at CVS. Then we he returns home after errands, he uses the skittles to lure Cora down to the basement quickly. He (allegedly) strangles her and then delays calling police quickly with Wi-Fi excuse. He avoids going to basement and "discovering" kids there until after first responders arrive. This way there's enough time to ensure Cora doesn't survive either. This would also explain why Lindsay had to be tossed from the window. He couldn't risk leaving Lindsay in the bedroom since there's a chance she could get to the bedroom door, get to Cora and her phone, and call for help.
