Blocking officers or interfering with arrests is a federal crime. It is impeding federal officers under 18 U.S.C. § 111, punishable by up to 8 years, and up to 20 years if it materially delays an arrest. Doing it to help someone evade capture is obstruction of justice under 18 U.S.C. § 1512, also up to 20 years. This is not protest. It is criminal obstruction. Arrest them and move on. There is a societal cost to enforcing the law and that cost is paid by society through danger to both our law enforcement officers and our civilians. This cost is an inevitability built it to the reality of enforcement and human nature. But America’s officers are very well trained and considering the size of our country and the number of officers or civilians lost during enforcement — we’re very successful at keeping this cost to a minimum.
