The wave is not actually moving, the pins are just moving up and down creating the illusion of movement. But if you put a ball on top of the pins moving up and down, it moves. Same as when you create a magnetic river, there's nothing moving but if you put something on top it'll float away. This is the basis for us to understand how to ride a gravity wave, a ripple in spacetime.
