The X1.2 flare produced an impressive full-halo CME, with the bulk directed NW and a notable Earth-directed component. Combined with the previous CME, this event could drive strong geomagnetic activity, strong G3–G4 storm potential.

A solar storm impact has arrived as expected, and now geomagnetic activity is increasing! The storm is dense (~13 /cm3), slow (~420 km/s), and double the strength (~11 nT) of the normal solar wind. Unless it dramatically strengthens we're probably looking at G1 levels at most.

Aurora borealis was seen around the world last night — all because of an extremely powerful solar flare On Sunday, the first major solar flare of the year occurred — an X1.95-class event. A cloud of charged particles reached Earth in less than 24 hours. On the night of January 19–20, the aurora was observed in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Western Europe, and North America. In the last 38 hours we've had 1.7 and 1.1 X-flares from the Sun, earthquake activity off the coast of Japan (M6.8, M6.4, M6.0) has becoming worrying and looking like foreshock activity for a BIG earthquake (M8+), and we're now in a S1 radiation storm from the 2nd X-flare. Multiple solar storm impacts are expected over the next few days. Big linear planetary alignment occurs on the 20th with the Sun, Mercury, Moon, Earth, and Uranus with Pluto and Saturn+Neptune in harmonic aspects. Yikes...

NEW: A solar storm was launched from the Sun yesterday and is on the way to Earth. NOAA has issued a Moderate Geomagnetic Storm Watch for Friday, October 9 due to anticipated arrival. Community consensus on the arrival of this CME is around the first half of the UTC day on Friday, but our in-house model has the storm arriving near Earth a bit later, closer to 15 UTC. Expected Kp range between 4 and 6. #spaceweather

It is an #aurora photographers dream starting now and lasting at least through the weekend. Right now, the biggest of the storms should hit late Thursday or early Friday morning and is well-represented in NOAA's prediction model. You can also get a 3D view of the coming solar storm in my earlier post. G3 to G4 storm levels are possible by Friday.

We could have a geomagnetic storm today 💥 Earth is being hit by fast solar wind at ~650 km/s with a density <1 p/cm^3. The magnetic field is 10 nT (2x stronger than normal), and the field just flipped into good connection with Earth's (Bz -5 nT).

The Sun is absolutely COOKING right now. 1 X-flare and 10 M-flares in less than 16 hours, and this still looks like preliminary activity to stronger solar flares and big coronal mass ejections as active region 4366 has grown significantly since my last update. BOOMSHAKALAKA!!

A series of reoccurring coronal holes are starting their rotation through Earth-center, and the trans-equatorial coronal hole will be geoeffective in ~5 days. Earth was in the high-speed solar wind from this coronal hole after a G2 geomagnetic storm for the M7.8 Philippines EQ.
