⚓ The timber keeping HMS Victory alive doesn’t all come from Britain. Today we source oak from centuries-old forestry systems in France. There is evidence that Horatio Nelson supported the idea of sustainable forestry during his lifetime.

There have never been any significant forestry systems in the UK until oaks were planted after the Napoleonic wars so their bark could to be used in tanning leather for horse harnesses. Ship timber was simply bought on the open market. There was always sufficient supply.
