If you understood evolutionary mating strategies of the human primate female that behavior would make perfect sense. The problem is we live in a low consequence environment now. Women on average are more free today than they've ever been in the history of our species. Female Sexuality is generally context dependent (That's because pregnancy is expensive and sperm is cheap) Their sexual expression however is slowly being changed by the new environment. With that said ... the old map is not completely gone. They still run short-term and long-term mating strategies (Strategic Pluralism). Something that most men never realized was going on. So you thought the Victorian romance script was real and it is at some level. But it doesn't supersede the evolutionary mating strategies those are baked in for survival.
