In a 2021 study, researchers took high-speed videos of two black woodpeckers pecking away at hardwood trunks in zoos and analyzed them frame by frame to see how the head and beak moved throughout each peck. 🚨 SCIENTISTS JUST DOSED THE FIRST PATIENT IN A TRIAL TO REVERSE CELLULAR AGING IN THE HUMAN EYE. Life Biosciences has begun an FDA-approved clinical trial using cellular reprogramming to regenerate aging neurons in the optic nerve of glaucoma patients. Instead of just slowing vision loss, the goal is to actually reverse aspects of cellular aging in the eye essentially trying to make old nerve cells young again. Why this matters: • Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide, caused by damage to the optic nerve • Current treatments can only slow progression they cannot regenerate lost vision • This approach uses partial cellular reprogramming (a controlled form of turning back the biological clock) • If successful, it could open the door to treating many other age-related neurodegenerative diseases The deeper implication is enormous: We may be entering an era where aging itself becomes treatable not just its symptoms. This is what is so special: being afforded a glimpse into the lives of Kenya's elephants. When we rescue an orphan, we are given a privileged position, raising them like our own. When these elephants go wild, they repay us in kind. And so, we get to see tiny baby elephants like this, covered head to toe in mud! This tiny baby in question? Nala, the daughter of ex-orphan Nasalot, who we rescued in 2000. Despite a traumatic start to life, Nasalot became one of the most nurturing females in our care – and is now raising her third calf in the wild. Nala is one of more than 90 calves born to elephants we once hand-raised – this is what your support makes possible! Discover her birth story:
