Some microorganisms may have little trouble surviving being blasted into space on planetary debris when an asteroid hits. That finding comes from subjecting a particularly hardy species of desert bacteria to a simulation of the immense forces produced by an asteroid collision. The research lends support to the idea that life jettisoned off world could spread to and seed new worlds by clinging to space rocks. Learn more: News from Science

An asteroid the size of three football fields is heading toward Earth It’s the asteroid “God of Chaos,” which is expected to approach the planet in about three years. By space standards, it will pass very close — closer than some satellites — and may even be visible without a telescope. NASA classifies it as a potentially hazardous object, but that doesn’t mean a collision is expected — it simply means it’s being closely monitored.

European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Sophie Adenot recently offered a rare peek into life aboard the International Space Station (ISS). In a video shared on Instagram, Adenot demonstrated her yin yoga routine in microgravity, showing online users what it takes to find balance while floating in space. Fans quickly flooded the comment section, with one user describing it as "magically elegant". For Adenot, practising yoga has been an integral part of her daily life for years on Earth, a habit she has successfully adapted to low-Earth orbit. Read more:

Earth + Theia = MOON Once upon a time — about 4.5 billion years ago — Earth wasn't alone. A rogue planet, Theia, nearly the size of Mars, smashed into it at full speed. The result? A fiery collision that could have created the Moon in just a FEW HOURS, not the millennia previously thought. NASA supercomputer simulations show that the Moon wasn't pieced together from space debris, but was instantly born from molten fragments of Earth and Theia thrown into orbit. That's why the Moon is so similar to Earth — it's not just a satellite, it's a sister.

On January 14, 2005, the Huygens probe descending through Titan’s atmosphere revealed one of the rarest views in space exploration. From Saturn’s moon Titan, Earth and the Moon crossed in front of the Sun as tiny shadows nearly a billion miles away. What makes it even more incredible is how rare the alignment was. A perfectly central Earth and Moon transit from Saturn’s system happens only about twice every 1,000 years. From that distance, our entire planet looked small enough to disappear into the sunlight.

What’s happening in the video? On the morning of December 15, 2025, Japanese astrophotographer Daichi Fujii captured something incredible: three bright flashes on the Moon. 🌕✨ The impacts happened at 4:35:55, 4:58:20, and 5:33:08 (Dec 15, 2025) — and observers in other countries reported seeing the flashes too. What caused them? Meteoroids. Three space rocks, each about 1 meter across, likely slammed into the lunar surface 20–30 minutes apart. They were probably part of the Geminid meteor shower. Around that time, Earth was moving through a stream of dust released by the asteroid (3200) Phaethon. Those particles hit Earth’s atmosphere at over 30 km/s, giving us up to ~120 shooting stars per hour. 🌠 But the Moon has no atmosphere — so meteoroids don’t burn up. They hit the ground directly… and we can sometimes see the impact as a flash. 💥 #Moon #astronomy #space #lunarimpact #StarWalk

🚨#BREAKING: NASA officials say a large asteroid could pass close enough to Earth within the next decade that there's a chance it could strike the planet 📌#Earth | #OuterSpace According to NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, a large asteroid could pass close enough to Earth within the next decade to pose a potential threat. The asteroid, named 2024 YR4, measures between 130 and 330 feet in diameter and could impact Earth in 2032. Despite its proximity, NASA officials emphasize that the likelihood of a direct impact remains low, with only a 1.3% chance of collision on December 22, 2032. Space experts further note that Asteroid 2024 YR4 has an "interesting" orbit, which makes tracking its path challenging but not necessarily alarming. While 2024 YR4’s orbit raises some concerns due to its unpredictability,, NASA remains vigilant, prioritizing further studies and readiness measures to mitigate any future risks. As of now, officials assure the public that, while the asteroid’s path warrants attention, the chances of impact remain extremely low.

The Earth Observatory on Axiom Station will feature eight massive acrylic panes forming a room sized cupola with an expansive windowed observatory - the largest windows ever constructed for space. Each pane must hold full cabin pressure against the vacuum of space while remaining crystal clear, all while surviving space debris and extreme temperature swings. Traditional fused silica glass simply can’t be manufactured at this scale, so Axiom turned to a special formulation engineered for the job. Even the frames demand precision: each one is carefully rinsed before receiving a chemical coating for corrosion protection. It’s an extraordinary engineering challenge, but the result will be like nothing ever seen.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks tonight and viewing conditions will generally be good, with clear skies for many of us and perhaps as many as 100 meteors every hour 🌠 A coronal mass ejection from the sun may also given an enhanced chance of seeing the aurora in northern areas

On April 27th at about 10:40 PM GMT, I was in the International Space Station Cupola and saw something really neat. I was scanning the sky to try to catch a glimpse of the approaching Progress MS-34 vehicle bringing new supplies. Just as we were passing over West Africa, I saw a bright object directly below us, streaking through the upper atmosphere. I saw its tail grow and then split apart into a shower of smaller pieces. I think it must have been some piece of orbital debris or a satellite breaking up as it entered the atmosphere. It was quite a light show!

Today on The Science and Experience of Energy, we describe mysterious mitochondria-like particles that we found in blood and saliva using high-resolution electron microscopy. These particles had double membranes, and some had folds in the internal membrane—a feature that is unique to mitochondria. We don’t yet know what exactly these particles are or their purpose, but we're excited to learn more about them. The massive image database is the first of its kind—have a look if you want to see what circulates in the human blood. Thanks to NIH and Baszucki Group who've supported our work, this resource is freely available to everyone.
