An asteroid the size of three football fields is heading toward Earth It’s the asteroid “God of Chaos,” which is expected to approach the planet in about three years. By space standards, it will pass very close — closer than some satellites — and may even be visible without a telescope. On January 14, 2005, the Huygens probe descending through Titan’s atmosphere revealed one of the rarest views in space exploration. From Saturn’s moon Titan, Earth and the Moon crossed in front of the Sun as tiny shadows nearly a billion miles away. What makes it even more incredible is how rare the alignment was. A perfectly central Earth and Moon transit from Saturn’s system happens only about twice every 1,000 years. From that distance, our entire planet looked small enough to disappear into the sunlight.

What’s happening in the video?⁠ ⁠ On the morning of December 15, 2025, Japanese astrophotographer Daichi Fujii captured something incredible: three bright flashes on the Moon. 🌕✨⁠ ⁠ The impacts happened at 4:35:55, 4:58:20, and 5:33:08 (Dec 15, 2025) — and observers in other countries reported seeing the flashes too.⁠ ⁠ What caused them? Meteoroids.⁠ Three space rocks, each about 1 meter across, likely slammed into the lunar surface 20–30 minutes apart.⁠ ⁠ They were probably part of the Geminid meteor shower. Around that time, Earth was moving through a stream of dust released by the asteroid (3200) Phaethon. Those particles hit Earth’s atmosphere at over 30 km/s, giving us up to ~120 shooting stars per hour. 🌠⁠ ⁠ But the Moon has no atmosphere — so meteoroids don’t burn up. On April 27th at about 10:40 PM GMT, I was in the International Space Station Cupola and saw something really neat. I was scanning the sky to try to catch a glimpse of the approaching Progress MS-34 vehicle bringing new supplies. Just as we were passing over West Africa, I saw a bright object directly below us, streaking through the upper atmosphere. I saw its tail grow and then split apart into a shower of smaller pieces. I think it must have been some piece of orbital debris or a satellite breaking up as it entered the atmosphere. It was quite a light show!

On April 27th at about 10:40 PM GMT, I was in the International Space Station Cupola and saw something really neat. Today on The Science and Experience of Energy, we describe mysterious mitochondria-like particles that we found in blood and saliva using high-resolution electron microscopy. These particles had double membranes, and some had folds in the internal membrane—a feature that is unique to mitochondria. We don’t yet know what exactly these particles are or their purpose, but we're excited to learn more about them. The massive image database is the first of its kind—have a look if you want to see what circulates in the human blood. Thanks to NIH and Baszucki Group who've supported our work, this resource is freely available to everyone.
