Happy Monday! We just added raycast sensors to mjlab. They let a robot sample the scene with virtual rays, returning distances and surface geometry. Rays can use orthographic projection for terrain scanning or perspective projection for simulating a depth camera.

370+ hours later and I finally stumbled onto a second quest where you use a shovel. And you only tap the ground with it once. 💀 Outside of using one at excavation sites (which I have yet to do), I can't think of a solid use for this tool. Pearl Abyss might benefit from making these tools matter a bit more to players.
