Lakanwal arrived in September 2021 as part of Operation Allies Welcome under the Biden administration after the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, received humanitarian parole, and was later granted asylum by the Trump administration earlier this year. The CIA said Thursday that Lakanwal previously worked with the U.S. government, including the CIA, as a member of a partner force in Kandahar that ended in 2021 following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. "Your [Department of Justice Inspector General] just reported this year that there was thorough vetting by DHS and by the FBI of these Afghans who were brought into the U.S.," Cordes said, asking why Trump blamed the Biden administration. "Because they let them in," Trump said Thursday. “Are you stupid? Are you a stupid person?” "They came in on a plane along with thousands of other people that shouldn't be here, and you're just asking questions because you're a stupid person," Trump said. The pause on asylum was only partially lifted, with Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, Afghanistan, Nigeria and others still facing a so-called travel ban. People from these countries still cannot be granted asylum.
