The UP “Smart Meter” issue is a good example of what happens when a flawed system is pushed onto people in haste. The government rolled out prepaid smart electricity meters “to reduce theft, improve billing, and modernize the system.” No more monthly bills. Recharge like a mobile. Sounds efficient,... right? But here are the problems: > People say their electricity cost has suddenly exploded. Meters are running “fast”. Charges even when home is empty > Electricity gets cut if your balance hits zero. No buffer. Even in peak summer!! >Daily wage families have to recharge constantly, the model feels suffocating to many in rural areas >Consumers allege, meters were installed without proper consent, despite guidelines making it optional >App not working, balances not visible, recharge confusion, and no quick help from authorities For the moment, govt has halted installation, formed an expert panel, allowed grace period before disconnection, promised no cuts on Sundays, and alerts for low balance. This contrast deserves a serious attention. If there is opposition to paying electricity bills and concerns are being raised over proper billing, how is such a large amount being mobilized at the same time for an international cause? Helping people in crisis reflects humanity and empathy, and that should be respected. But alongside empathy comes civic responsibility. Electricity, roads, transport, and public infrastructure run on taxpayer money. These systems survive only when citizens also contribute fairly. The real issue, therefore, is not donation versus no donation, but whether public duty and humanitarian concern can go together. Can a society show generosity for global causes while also fulfilling its responsibility towards its own public systems? That is the real question. Today in Parliament, I raised concerns affecting India’s prepaid recharge customers, who account for nearly 90% of the country’s 125 crore mobile users. (1) If a recharge expires, stopping outgoing calls may be understandable. But why are incoming calls stopped as well? Once validity ends, people cannot be reached, and even essential messages like bank OTPs may not come through. In emergencies or urgent situations, this can leave a person completely cut off. My demands: First is that incoming calls and SMS should continue for at least one year after the last recharge so essential communication does not stop. Second, a mobile number should not be deactivated for at least three years after the last recharge. Third, telecom operators should introduce a low cost “incoming only” plan for users who simply need their number to remain active for essential calls, OTPs and government services. (2) I also raised the issue of 28 day recharge “monthly” plans. If something is called monthly, it should follow the calendar month of 30–31 days. Because of the 28 day cycle, consumers effectively end up paying for 13 recharges in a year. (28 days × 13 recharges = 364 days) Telecom Operators should sync up their Recharge Plans with the true calendar months, and not 28 day plans. A mobile phone today is not a luxury. It is a lifeline. I have been a staunch believer in local govt systems. The DC system could work but doesn’t. I filed an application with proof of a commercial entity working in my neighbourhood. It is a company whose owner is connected to the most powerful minister in Sindh. He held loud parties in the garden. After the DC application, he approached seniors of mine. Promises were made. I explained the noise problem. He promised it would not happen. It still does. After 3am sehri parties the caterer crashes around removing the trestle tables. The system does not work even if you are on the correct legal side. Everyone is just expected to accept this group that rules Sindh and we are stuck with their shitty systems. There is a gender angle to this: single woman households, no matter what their class, have next to no support from the law or system and are vulnerable no matter what they do.

Brothers and sisters of Ireland, 🇮🇪 We gather not in silence, but in strength. We gather not in hate, but in hope. And we gather not to divide, but to demand. For the past number of days, our country has been brought to a standstill. Not by chaos without cause, but by people pushed to the edge. Farmers, workers, drivers, families, ordinary Irish people have taken to the roads, to the streets, to the gates of this nation’s lifelines because the cost of simply living has become too much to bear. They are not there for attention. They are there because they cannot afford not to be. Fuel prices have surged to unsustainable levels, driven by global crises and policies beyond the control of ordinary people. And yet, it is the ordinary people who are expected to carry the burden. They tell us support has been given. They tell us measures are in place. They tell us to be patient. But patience does not fill a tank. Patience does not keep a business alive. Patience does not put food on the table. Across Ireland, roads have been blocked, cities brought to a halt, and supply lines disrupted. Fuel depots, ports, even the country’s only oil refinery have been targeted in protest. Not out of malice but out of desperation. And now we see the response. The government condemns the protests. They speak of disruption, of law and order, of consequences. They warn of penalties and even bring in the Defence Forces to assist. But where was this urgency before? Where was this response when people were crying out for help? We ask not for chaos. We ask not for division. We ask for fairness. We ask for a government that listens before the country grinds to a halt. We ask for action before people are forced onto the streets to be heard. Because let us be clear: These protests did not appear out of nowhere. They are the result of years of pressure, rising costs, and people feeling ignored. You, in government, we ask you now!! Zambian households are now enduring electricity cuts of up to 21 hours a day. It is therefore interesting, if not funny, to see Zambians themselves making light of the situation in these videos. In some areas, the situation has been even more extreme, with power available for only one to two hours a day, or none at all for several days. What I fail to understand is why African leaders consistently fail to fix things that are so simple. It is not only Zambia; even Zimbabwe has struggled with this same perennial problem. However, if you go to Egypt or Morocco, they have resolved this issue through massive investments in solar power. Yet we continue to lag behind, trapped in endless excuses. It truly boggles the mind. Still, credit to Zambians for finding humour in their hardship, sometimes laughter is the only light left when the power goes out. ZESCO stands for Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation. It is the state-owned power company responsible for the generation, transmission, distribution, and retail supply of electricity across Zambia.

Can you see the men climbing trees and being perched on them with a mobile phone in their hand? These men aren’t climbing trees for fun, this has been their daily ritual for the past few months. This video is from Penchikalpet Mandal, Asifabad District, Telangana The people in this video climbing trees are local farmers. Telangana Congress government decided to go all fancy with fertilizer supply and launched an app to book the same. Most farmers don’t have smart phones, and those who do also don’t know how to use an app. People in many villages are taking help of youngsters and are also buying cheaper smart phones just to book urea!! More than 90 percent of farmers in the country cannot afford smart phones and are not well versed with the technology - a very important detail the smartest policy makers in the government decided to ignore. I love and support Ukraine not only because it is my country and my people. Not because we are so perfect and good. Ukraine has as many internal problems as other countries, and in some areas, perhaps even more. And yes, we have all kinds of people, there are good and bad, there are those who do good, but, unfortunately, there are also those who do evil and commit crimes. Just like in your country, there are such people too. I support Ukraine because the right to life and to one's own path is not the privilege of "perfect" nations, but a fundamental human right. No one is less worthy of protection simply because their country has flaws, mistakes, or a difficult history. If that were true, no country in the world would have the right to exist. Because no one is perfect or free from imperfections. Supporting Ukraine means refusing to accept violence and aggression as the norm. This is a rejection of the logic that someone has the right to destroy others simply because they feel like it. Today, it's Ukraine. Tomorrow, with this approach, it could be anyone. And that's the point. Not idealization. Not slogans. But a simple moral choice: side with those defending their home, or turn a blind eye to evil until it knocks on your door. Truth requires no justification. You don't need to be an expert to see the difference between those who defend themselves and those who come to kill, destroy, and erase the identity of others. … outside the window, there is winter and war. At night, temperatures in many Ukrainian cities drop to -19°C (approximately -2.2°F). Many homes remain without electricity or heating. People wear layers of warm clothes indoors and place firebricks on gas stoves, trying any way they can to heat their apartments. It is just as hard for animals; even for them, enduring the constant cold is a struggle. It is a relief when an apartment has gas, but many high-rise buildings don’t even have that. This winter has proven to be much colder and more difficult than expected, and as it turns out, we were completely unprepared for it. The state of Ukraine’s energy grid is critical. Today, due to russian strikes, Kyiv and seven other regions are without power. In the capital, some buildings are still without heat. In Zaporizhzhia, over 30,000 people have been left without electricity. The current attacks on urban infrastructure pose a real threat to human life. The russians are using the severe cold as yet another psychological weapon against Ukrainians! The antisemitism that was festering under the surface for decades, has exploded. And for those of us who stand against it, we are not the popular kids. The so called “cool kids” are wearing a keffiyeh, calling for an intifada and demanding a Palestine between the river and the sea even if they can’t tell you which river or which sea. Keffiyeh Karens. That’s the mainstream now. Standing up against jihadism is now the counter-culture. Standing up for western democratic values against terror and extremism: that is now the counter-culture. Using facts and reason and knowing history: that is now the counter-culture. People! WE are the counterculture. And we are doing it. The Jewish people have found our voice because standing up for what we believe in, even when it’s not popular, is part of who we are. Our tiny people haven’t survived for millennia and outlived every empire that tried to destroy us by always being the cool kids. In fact, we almost never are. We know when it’s time to swim against the tide because we know this playbook. We have been here before. And our message to the world is as follows: the hatred that targets is targeting you too. I have a question for you, keffiyeh Karen from campus: where would you prefer to be a woman? in Iran? In Afghanistan? or in Israel? We cannot take the freedoms that we enjoy here in the US in Israel and in the west for granted, and right now even saying just that is swimming against the tide – it is being the counterculture.
