He forgot to add that taking deep breaths is very important — it will not only keep you floating even more freely but also help you relax mentally and avoid panicking

I still don't know how to stay calm inside an ocean, sorry. I just know if I ever come across situations like that it's over.

@Jellenne And if it happens in saltwater, it's even easier because of the additional buoyancy provided by the saltwater.

I must have swallowed metal when I was young because I still can't stay afloat after trying this😩😩😩

I think the reason people freak out is because no one will relax in the first place, especially not when you think you'll drown. And also when your head is above water like that, the water is technically still going in your ears, so that could also be where people will freak out.

But pretty hard to do that in the ocean or river, because of the wave and current

Always keep your lungs inflated, breathe slowly and controlled, your lungs are a built in life preservation.

As long as you keep air in your lungs You Will Float. I learned “Drown Proofing” in high school and we floated with our hands and feet tied together and the only time we started to sink is when we were laughing- hence, no air in our lungs.

As someone who didn't learn to swim after 2 near drownings a a lil kid - panicking is a normal part of panicking. So how abt 1st step being, how to stop panicking?! (The above was truth w/ sarcasm, no actual question asked)

Similar to being caught in a riptide - do not fight against it, you won’t win. Stay calm & float with it until you’re out of the rip and you’ll still be alive and have some strength left to start making ur way back into shore by paralleling the land until you’re out of the area of the rip, then make ur way back in.

Don't panic, keep breathing. By keeping air in your lungs you'll stay afloat 👍 Most important, DON'T PANIC

As an Australia, I’m still amazed when I hear there’s some who don’t know how to swim or fear the water. It’s one of the simplest and most rejuvenating experiences for your well being.

Did you not get swimming lessons as a child? I’m 65 & learned how to swim at 4 swimming lessons every week at local council pool, first thing you get taught is how to float. I had my children in pool from 3 months both swimming by 1, went on to swim for county.

Ahhh...survival back float. I was thinking the dead mans float. This is actually much more simple than it looks. I taught my kids as well and yes they were fearful that they would sink if not swimming. Not at all and actually relaxing.

I actually learned this many, many years ago when taking my lessons for my bronze. One of the things we learned in lifesaving 1,2,3. If I am correct we called it the dead mans float.

Everybody’s physiology is different, so this won’t work for everyone. Especially black people. (Higher bone and muscle mass on average)

A good tip in that situation is "stop talking" also, its the air in your lungs that's keeping you afloat. Also that position works great in a flat body of water, if there are any waves you risk getting a nose and mouthful of water, which will not be great.

Ya if there’s any type of wind or swell water will be covering your face. This is stupid.

This is actually brilliant I’ve always panicked in deep water thinking I had to fight it. Just float and breathe? Mind blown. Everyone needs this in their back pocket.

Profilbild von notabot

You need to have air in your lungs. If you do not, you'll sink like a stone... unless the water has more salt than that swimming pool's water.
