Here is my experience (in 4K) from earlier today in one of the world's first ever public Tesla Robotaxi rides in Austin, Texas with FSD Unsupervised! No-one is in the driver seat and the safety monitor in the passenger seat does not have a steering or pedals. It was awesome.

For the first time ever, I rode in a fully autonomous driverless ride-hailing (Waymo) vehicle in San Fransciso. The vehicle navigated the busy streets just like any vehicle with a driver. But, I got to admit, it was surreal sitting in the back and riding without a driver (and no one to talk). The vehicle’s computer controlled everything including the music, the temperature, announcements such as how long the ride takes and arrival. Waymo and similar others could be the new norm in many cities around the world in the not distant future. The question is: What would happen to the jobs of millions of drivers of taxis and ride hailing services around the world? Waymo is owned by Alphabet (Google’s parent) and has expanded beyond its original base in San Francisco to other U.S. cities including Los Angeles, Dallas, etc.

there’s a lot to like about Zoox but to call it the best robotaxi a disservice to all the others doing much better in the space actual driving feels way behind waymo - gotten stuck many times for no obvious reasons across many trips - 40-50% slower than avg car or uber ride - ride experience is not the smoothest, abrupt stops - feels like a very beginner driver on the road that you have to keep an eye on the form factor does feel incredibly futuristic but that’s only good if the car can drive well and right now it can’t

There were no injuries reported in this safety critical failure. Reports indicate that another vehicle eventually came for the girls. AUTO LANE CHANGE ISSUES CONTINUE W/ FSD V14.2.1.25 Starting with FSD v14.2, there has been a significant regression in the system's confidence when performing automatic lane changes. If a vehicle is following in the adjacent lane at a safe distance and consistent speed, the ego car will often activate the turn signal and begin crossing the lane line before suddenly aborting the maneuver, pausing briefly, and then either proceeding with the lane change or abandoning it entirely. This behavior appeared in v14.2.1 and unfortunately persists in v14.2.1.25. While it is not a safety issue per se, it is definitely one that needs to be addressed, as it causes confusion and frustration for all surrounding drivers on the road when it occurs. My CyberTruck is such a safe and courteous “driver”. We were passing this semi when all of a sudden, we started slowing down. We have learned to trust the truck in instances like this while using FSD Supervised. We soon realized that there were emergency vehicles on the side of the road and our CyberTruck slowed to allow the semi to merge into the left lane. Safety first and respectful driving.

"Achieving demonstrably safe AI — where safety is proven, not just promised — requires a holistic approach. Beyond a smart and capable Driver, you also need a closed-loop, realistic Simulator to train and rigorously test the Driver in a myriad of challenging situations, and a sharp Critic to evaluate the Driver's performance and identify areas for improvement." Waymo says that autonomous driving isn’t just a matter of building a “smart driver,” but rather creating a full AI ecosystem centered on safety from the ground up. At the core is the Waymo Foundation Model, a unified world-model that powers all major components of Waymo’s autonomous stack (Driver, Simulator, Critic). "By using a “Think Fast/Think Slow” architecture (combining rapid sensor-fusion with deep semantic reasoning), this system enables the car to detect complex and rare road scenarios (e.g. a burning vehicle ahead), reason about them, and choose safe behavior. Waymo trains large “Teacher” AI-models for driving, simulation, and evaluation, then distills them into smaller, efficient “Student” models suitable for real-world deployment, while keeping safety validation tightly integrated. As expected, Tesla’s Model Y ride-hailing service in the Bay Area currently has a safety driver in the driver’s seat, which is why Tesla is calling it a ride-hailing service rather than a Robotaxi service. It is still a paid service though and is likely using the same software as the Austin Robotaxis. Once Tesla receives the required permit, they will remove the safety driver and instead have a safety monitor in the passenger seat like they do in Austin. That could happen within the next 1–2 months, according to Elon.
