For too long, Westminster has stood by while our high streets fell into decline. That ends now. We’re giving local people and councils more control over what opens on their high street - and tougher powers to crack down on businesses that aren’t good for our communities.

I’ve walked London’s high streets and seen the same pattern. Poorer communities with clustering of gambling premises while wealthier areas are protected. That’s why I campaigned to scrap Aim to Permit. This is a win for local communities and the future of our high streets.

Policy in Focus is back. This week I’m focusing on my safer streets campaign to end Aim To Permit, which result in clustering of gambling shops on our high streets. Councils & local communities deserve a say. Some issues need more than a soundbite.

Bristol North West is home to some brilliant high streets - including Gloucester Road, with the longest stretch of independent shops in Europe. But too many communities have watched their high streets decline, with local services replaced by businesses that don’t always serve the needs of the community. The Government is putting power back in the hands of local people, backing local businesses and giving communities a real say over the future of their high streets.

For too long, criminal gangs have exploited our high streets to launder dirty money and undercut honest local businesses. We’re cracking down! Shutting these fronts down, seizing illegal cash, driving organised crime off our high streets and putting those responsible behind bars. Our high streets should belong to hardworking businesses and local communities - not organised criminals.

I know how much businesses at the heart of our communities are being hit by the cost of living crisis. Labour's 5 point plan will boost our local shops, restaurants and pubs so we can get our high streets thriving again.

I joined Times Radio to discuss the fantastic news that the Government is scrapping Aim to Permit. After years of campaigning, councils will finally have greater power to say no to new betting (and vape) shops. Now we can start shaping the high streets our communities deserve.

What would our high streets look like without independent businesses? Great to visit Chancers Café in Stirchley and hear about the vital role small businesses play in our communities. Independent businesses create jobs, bring people together and help our high streets thrive. Supporting local matters.

⚠️ WOW. High streets are being hit with a business rates bombshell. Chancellor has serious questions to answer: ❓How many businesses will pay rates for the first time? ❓How many will see bills go up? ❓Why isn’t she using the powers she gave herself to help high streets?

We are cracking down on crime on our high streets. Our Crime and Policing Bill removes the £200 shoplifting limit and creates a new offence of assaulting a shop worker. Labour is protecting our high streets and the people who serve our communities.
