There are heroes among us. Our algorithms don’t highlight them enough. Too often, our media gives the darkness disproportionate attention while their light goes unseen. But there are heroes. People like Baker Police Chief Carl Dunn. When catastrophic floods hit his Louisiana community, Chief Dunn took his own boat... into the rising waters and rescued more than 400 people. He brought some into his own home, where he and his wife gave them dry clothes, warm blankets, food and shelter. He didn’t wait for someone else. He didn’t ask what was in it for him. He saw people in need, and he went. There are people like this all across our country. They don’t get paid like millionaires. They don’t have the fame of athletes, movie stars or social media celebrities. Most will never trend. But they serve. They sacrifice. They show up. And when others are in danger, they run toward them. There are more heroes among us than our feeds would ever have us believe. May we see them. May we celebrate them.
