'There can be only one.' Lambert was charismatic, Connery was full-on iconic, Clancy was superb and Queen supplied the perfect soundtrack. For a movie made on a budget of $16M, it still looks fantastic. Despite it's flaws (visible wires, etc), I still love Highlander. 10/

Highlander was released OTD in 1986 - A THREAD The opening sword fight is supposed to take place in Madison Square Gardens' car park, it's actually a London fruit market. The sparks were created by having wires up the actors arms attached to car batteries. 1/

'You talk funny, Nash. Where are you from?' Christopher Lambert had just barely learned to speak English when he accepted the role. He was born in New York, moved to Geneva when he was two, then eventually settled in Paris when he was a teenager. 2/

'I'm not Spanish, I'm Egyptian.' Sean Connery's scenes had to be filmed in a week. He bet director Russell Mulcahy that they would not finish in 7 days, Connery lost the bet, but had no trouble paying up, he earned $1 million for his week's work. Not sure he nailed the accent. 3/

'I'm Candy.' 'Of course you are.' The awesome Clancy Brown was so convincing as the Kurgan that some crew members refused to go near him. His line, 'of course you are,' is a cheeky nod to Sean Connery's same response to 'Hi, I'm Plenty,' from Diamonds are Forever (1971) 4/

'If your head comes away from your neck, it's over.' Sean Connery was often drunk while filming in Scotland, freely passing around scotch whiskey to cast and crew. Christopher Lambert became close friends with Connery, praising his legendary co-star for his generosity. 5/

'It's a kind of magic.' Director Russell Mulcahy started his career directing music videos for artists like Duran Duran and Elton John. Highlander is a visual feast, both in it's cinematography by Gerry Fisher, and it's imaginary use of transitions by editor, Peter Honess. 6/

'Who wants to live forever?' Rock group Queen were only supposed to write one song for Highlander, but were inspired to write more. Brian May wrote 'Who Wants to Live Forever' during a cab ride. And Roger Taylor took the line 'It's a Kind of Magic' and ran with it. 7/

'It's better to burn out that to fade away.' In stark contrast to his evil character, Clancy Brown felt it necessary to apologise to the Priests and Nuns for his character's dialogue being spoken in such a holy place, for fear he'd offended them. The cuddly Kurgan. 8/

One Take Wonder. The destruction of the famous Silvercup neon sign had to be done in one take because the production did so much damage to the set and the roof that re-takes were impossible. The eagle eyed amongst you might spot the cables in shot actually pulling the set down 9/

Highlander has a cult following for how surprisingly good it is. Ironically Highlander 2 has a cult following for how surprisingly bad it is.

I still love this movie. I wish it had been a standalone, as the others were awful. And yes, the visible wires are funny.

There was a time when I was out of work, living very frugally and owned one video tape. This was it and I've watched or listened to this movie literally hundreds of times. I can still recite 90% of the dialogue.

So many things to love about the movie. Grand scheme and effects, amazing music and a script that was energetic but had some great moments throughout. 😎😎😎

In a more just World Brian May would have won 2 Oscars.

This is one of my most loved films, I went on to watch the whole of the series as well, always wondered should they make a reboot
