I spoke to a person detained by ICE yesterday, and it was heartbreaking. He is the caregiver of a young daughter, works two jobs, has medical issues, and has been in detention for over a month. We must continue to fight for real oversight at these detention facilities.

The facility, which was a detention facility prior to it being converted for ICE use, has a max capacity of 500. There are currently over 4000 detainees, and they do not have the supplies to feed and care for these people. ICE is lying, again. They’re claiming we “showed resistance” and “demanded to attend an immigration hearing.” The facts: We had an announced visit scheduled where we met with detained people and left the Stewart Detention Center by around 2:18 PM on our OWN ACCORD. We had our own arrangements with an attorney to go to immigration court to observe a hearing. We went through a separate entrance to the court where ICE tried to BLOCK us from entering, despite them having NO control or jurisdiction over the courts. After waiting about 20 minutes, we finally were able to observe the court proceedings and left at 3:09 PM to then host a press conference OUTSIDE the facility grounds. It’s no surprise ICE is lying — they’re trying to make this about something other than the vile conditions reported inside these private, for-profit prisons. They’re trying to interfere with our duty to perform congressional oversight. But we’re not going to stop. Stewart Detention Center must be shut down. All of these for-profit facilities must be eliminated. And ICE needs to be dismantled.

Once again, a detainee at the Eloy Detention Center told me about how they're being abused and tortured here. Chlorinated water, worms in fountains, food that looks like vomit, people getting sick, and working for $3/day while getting harassed and threatened by staff. I'll have more to say about my 11th oversight visit to Eloy, but I'm going to keep fighting to drain the $250B that ICE has secured to keep treating people like slaves.
