Gov. Mikie Sherrill: I want to talk about the situation at Delaney Hall, a private detention facility in Newark that I've long said needs to close. For days we've heard reports of unsafe, inhumane and unconstitutional conditions there. I went there myself and I was denied entry. We've seen increasing violence, arrests, and pepper spray at Delaney Hall, as well as public threats from the Trump administration. We know what ICE has done in other states, and we know American citizens lost their lives. I refuse to let that happen in New Jersey.

If you add that into the base-year funding and look at this year, there is a $115 million decrease, but that was one-time anomaly funding. The core issue here is that there really are no guardrails on ICE and CBP. I can’t vote for it. I can’t be complicit in continuing to allow them to violate the constitutional rights of people across this country.
