Thank you Hauwa for lending your voice to improve inclusivity👌🏾 in the international development space, we refer to them as People with disability not people living with disability. This is a recent development and most people may not be aware🤗

The saddest part is that if Nigeria is this unprepared for people whose disabilities we can see like Mobility or Hearing issues, imagine how grossly unprepared Nigeria is to help those with disabilities we may not physically see: ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia. It’s not lack of money. It’s lack of love. And that’s the real disability in our leadership.

@preciousunichi Hostel rooms for disabled people will be given out to normal people at more expensive prices because of the extra comfort that comes with it. Very terrible country

This is a program happening in Kwara state and it is aimed to advocate and also improve healthcare for PWD. The aim was to care for only 50 people as the program is organised by students and we all know how hard getting donations can be, but will your help, the number can 1/

Thank you @Hauwa_L for spotlighting this! At last year’s #GenZSummitAfrica, we didn’t just make room for people with disabilities - one of them was a speaker, and we gave free standard tickets to her community to attend. We are building an inclusive ecosystem. #GenZSummit2025

I hope more people start understanding that somethings doesn’t have to happen close to home before we start advocating for it.

We have been socially conditioned to think people with disabilities are beggars because you don’t get to see them often in social gatherings. Buses, banks, roads, and most worship centers, are not optimized to meet the need of people with disabilities. It’s so sad. 😭 I can’t count how many times I will be standing on my own, and people will just be like take this N50, N200, and N100.. I will be like what for?

Nigeria is not optimised for people living with disabilities and that's a fact. And the "when" is not even looking like in the next decade or so. We are actually fvcked! 😌 But hauwa, why does it have to be the kneecap? 😂

I've come to realise that the Nigerian communal spirit is mostly in recreation. When it comes to the collective building of society, that community evaporates. Nigerians don't care about social problems outside their circle until the problem is nearby.

Yes, you don’t have to be affected by something before you advocate for it.

This is why I’ll stop at nothing to learn sign language and Braille. It’s totally unfair that we exclude people with disabilities—we learn new languages by choice, although not entirely our fault, we never take it upon ourselves to learn theirs.

You don’t have a disability other than the fact that your head is not correct… Then she says, you don’t have to be born with a disability before you have a disability.. Two truth co-existing…

Advocacy works are ongoing in the urban planning and development sector in Lagos state to improve accessibility in designs. Funnily, they don’t require extra expenses, they just require people who ca think about them in designs.

I shared an experience about this same thing here. Thank you for speaking to this Hauwa, we need more voices on this. It's unimaginable how PWDs operate effectively in a city not built with them in mind.

Thank you for bringing up this important and timely topic. Disability inclusion remains one of the most overlooked areas in Nigeria, and it reflects deeply in how our society is structured. From our economy to our educational and social systems, people living with disabilities are often left out not by choice but by design. Many buildings are not disability friendly, as accessibility is rarely considered in architectural planning or urban design. There are very few schools equipped to support children or adults with disabilities, and limited government programs or funding to help them live independently or access employment opportunities. Culturally, our family, religious, and traditional systems have also not evolved to fully embrace disability inclusion. Too often, disability is seen through the lens of fate, superstition, or pity rather than as a call for empathy, equity, and social responsibility. It is time we change this mindset. Inclusion should not be an afterthought; it should be built into every aspect of our society: education, infrastructure, policy, healthcare, and community life. I hope that one day, Nigeria will truly wake up to a society where every person, regardless of ability, has equal opportunity to live, learn, and thrive.

The fact that my neighbour sent me the link to this beautiful message is a tiny proof that my advocacy work to create awareness for PWDs in our community is gradually being embraced by people in my community. Thanks Hauwa for this lovely work! 💐

I truly love that you said this, I also didn’t know how much Nigeria 🇳🇬 doesn’t have any accessibility in place for people with disabilities until I moved abroad. They are considered in everything as they should, they human beings!!

In schools, in churches, in work places, everywhere! We should have sign language on our curriculum, accessible books in braille, ramps and anything else that’ll make to easier for them to function in society! I sincerely hope this post fuels a movement to make this happen 🥹

As a corper serving in an NGO, I’ve had the opportunity to serve as a rapporteur for a Focus Group Discussion where Deaf women were the target audience. That’s when I realized how hard simple things can be.

Thank you for lending your voice. For a community to progress, it must reflect on all that it is getting wrong. And this is a step in that direction. On a lighter note, your video self suppose feature sign-language expert 😅(no do am yourself O, cos na waka, shege we go see)

Hello Hauwa. Thank you for bringing awareness to this long standing challenge in Nigeria. My friend @thejoyeniolaa and I are working on a project to provide a number of disabled children with wheelchairs and prosthetics and enroll them in school.

It's such a sad thing seeing some people trivializing this issue. There's a law mandating public buildings to have ramps to aid PWDs. Endorsement is all but zero. Growing up as a teenager in Lagos was tough. I rarely took danfo/molue buses via those ones on the road, except they graciously slowed down. Instead, I made sure I had more than the required tfare; go to the parks and ensure I enter the buses there and paid for the front two seats so I can sit properly and keep crutches & not have anyone squeezing my legs. It's a lot better today cos I drive. But there are 1001 persons who didn't have such liberties like me then or now. Thank you for this, 🙌

Thank you @Hauwa_L for lending your voice. The inaccessibility of buildings has always limited me from going out cuz I do a lot of calculations in my head whenever I'm going out. Once I find out online that it is not accessible, I will rather stay put in my comfort zone.
