@eonsys I’m skeptical of this because it doesn’t seem like they also simulated all the nerves going to the limb muscles and other sensory nerves, etc.

Highly unlikely and very misrepresented. Why? Because there is no feedback. Without sensory input, the legs aren't stopping on the ground by control from the "synthetic brain wiring". This is, frankly, garbage. Creatures aren't "brains and bodies" where we can emulate one but not the other. Creatures are whole systems. Yes, we have categorized the parts - that's science. Note that "science" and "scissors" and "schism" all come from the same root word - to separate.

Copying the network that evolution already learned is not the “opposite of AI.” In a connectome simulation, you still have neurons modeled mathematically, synaptic weights, dynamical systems, and control policies emerging from network structure. From a systems perspective, this is a neural network producing behavior. The difference is where the weights in the network come from; machine learning => learned from data, evolution / connectome => learned by evolution. Also, the simulation is extremely simplified. Many synapses are unknown, the neuron dynamics are approximated, body-environment feedback is simplified. This is just taking the already learned inference model that nature deployed, and sloppily copying the connections in software, then showing approximate fly behavior. And consider the psychology behind this. Humans are extremely good at seeing intentional behavior in noise. Fly behavior already looks random. Guaranteed a ton of over interpretation here.

@eonsys This seems probably overstated judging by the behavior of the author in the linked post. Would be cautious about taking this at face value.

Again this is one of the most incorrect and sensationalized takes of what actually happened. 1) They simulated reflexory neuromuscular structures in a simulated environment. A genuine first. 2) They are completely unable to simulate learning, memory, information processing, etc…

@eonsys You're starting to figure out bugs aren't really alive, or perhaps most bugs aren't. Rather they're basically just organic computer living out programs that are programmed into them. Then you have anomalous ones like ants and how colonies function, that would be interesting.

@eonsys how would the fly inside the simulation even begin to understand where its actual awareness is, when its body is just an avatar, and not the literal home of its brain?

@eonsys sounds fake af. the brain is not the sole organ responsible for movements in a fly, there way more variables here. The animation is likely fake as well

@eonsys I hope they remembered to simulate some fruit for it.

The fly is "trained" by natural selection and its behaviors are encoded in the genomic data that determines how it develops therefore if you emulate the functions of a fully developed brain you are emulating a structure that is the accumulation of training over a vast number of generations, including those of its ancestor species. You'd be shocked by what percentage of your behavior is inherited from worms.
