Anger and hatred are very different. Anger is an evolved emotion with a specific function: it helps us bargain for better treatment. If you anger me, I may respond in ways that attempt to recalibrate how you treat me—by inflicting costs or withholding benefits. Anger is typically expressed through verbal confrontation, hostility, or even by withdrawing, such as giving someone the silent treatment. In all of these cases, the goal of anger is to navigate the relationship and change the other person’s behavior. Hatred, however, is different. Hatred goes beyond bargaining. It is the belief that the target is so toxic, so costly to one’s well-being, that the world would be better if they no longer existed. Anger says, “I want you to treat me differently.” Hatred says, “You shouldn’t exist anymore.”
