They had no warning…. 😞 The Appalachians are decimated.

There were actually warnings days before Helene arrived. They had just received 10 inches of rain and was told there would be massive flooding and to evacuate.

While it is a very unfortunate tragedy, there was plenty of warning way ahead of Helene. Although I don’t know if local news showed the most minute details about everything, the potential of a massive flood event was called out DAYS before Helene made landfall.

I’m from Etown which is next door to Hampton. We are in the literal mountains. This kind of flooding is not supposed to happen.

Huh, there were plenty of warnings. I remember telling my mother last week i couldn’t believe it was powerful enough to hit tn/nc. They clearly had it mapped right into that direction. You really should have asked, why did people not take it seriously?? I bet 90% of them were telling themselves nothing is gonna happen.

It breaks my heart when I hear, “it’s not supposed to be a flood zone.” That’s years of horrible advice, misinformation, and mislabeling. Please know & share: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “NOT A FLOOD ZONE!” 1/4 of all US flood losses occur in “Zone X,” the lowest-risk zone.

They did the right thing, open the doors and let the water through, 2-3 feet of fast moving water can sweep a house right off its foundation

Stop with this no warning bs. Take some accountability sometimes. Significant flooding was well expressed.

I’m not trying to downplay anything since this is a historic situation up there but they had warning. The forecasts a couple days out were VERY accurate from the NHC and the local NWS offices. I don’t think people took them as seriously as they should had
